It was a very productive first weekend on the new layout!

First step: completed the hidden reverse loop that will be under the first level.

Should I protect foam board before I lay track?

I am planning a modular switching layout which will have two boards, each to be 1'6" x 3'. I have built foam board railroads before but never really got beyond the "I have got some track down - let's run trains" point. I hope to do better this time so I have been thinking about ground cover etc.

Homasote

I like to think that I am not a hoarder as things are not available where I live when needed so I stock up. Long range plans to have drawbacks and getting out a couple sheets of Homasote it seems that they have developed a distinctive sag sad

Flipping up the Mooers Junction N Scale Railroad

Hopefully the above picture got your attention! Getting to the age where 'going under the layout' is no longer an option I came up with the solution shown below. After removing rolling stock it takes only a few minutes to flip to vertical, that includes roling out the racks stored under the layout. In updates to follow I will post additional photos of details and progress to my N Scale Mooers Junction Railroad.

Layout Update: Mid June 2015 - Part 1

The current work area is located in the center of the peninsula on the upper or third level of the layout.  All of the track and turnouts for this area have been installed and it is now ready for the fun part, known as electrical installation.

Hi guys,

Where to Get 2" Foamboard"

I live the the San Francisco Bay area,  I used to be able to buy 1 or 2 inch thick pink or blue foam board locally at Home Depot or Lowes.  No longer carried.  Does anyone know a local source??

Helix Adventure

We will be following along the progress of the two helices for my N scale ARZC.  The helices are each 18" radii with Atlas code 80 track nailed to 3/8" plywood.  Each turn of the helix will be constructed with 8 chords of the 3/8" plywood, each chord will be joined by a biscuit and then 2" tall blocks will create the space between levels.  One helix is 6.5 turns next to the classification yard and the other is 5 turns in the corner where the branchline starts.  The branchline will be on 0.25 turns of the second helix, above the mainline.

Pulley system for hoisting layout out of way

Hi Everyone, I need some ideas on how to set up a pulley system to hoist my planned 4m x 2m layout to the rafters in the garage to make space for a vehicle to be parked underneath it.

Anyone who has done something similar?
