Locos - Rolling stock (general)
Athearn RTR Motor Sounds
I have an Athearn RTR SD45 that runs great, reliably, and relatively quietly. However, it has an odd, high pitched noise when running forward that it does not have when running backwards. It isn't a real concern on my club layout, but I like tinkering and wouldn't mind any advice or experience on what this could be?
Best description I can give is it is a whine more than a growl, and without the shell on I cannot audibly locate the sound.
Thanks!
Lighted Numberboards or not...
Hi everyone,
I'm wrapping up a DCC, detailing, and renumbering project on a Proto 2000 GP-7 that has the common headlight and numberboards found on almost all Proto 2000 units. I used Microscale decals for the lighted boards but have been less than impressed.
Rehab My Wrecker

A-line Twin Stacks, truck frames problem
On occasion yesterday I was inspecting one of the sets of container cars, and several of the trucks simply came apart in my hands. I thought perhaps MEK would glue things back together, but that was a negative.
Project Organizer
Hello all,
Here is a photo of a project organizer I built towards the end of last year (2020) to help me be better organized when it comes to the many modeling projects that I have. (For some reason the projects seem to multiply)
When I get more time I'll post more photo's as a how-to on this project.
Stay tuned.
How Replace Mantua Locomotive Headlight??
This is my first attempt at upgrading a steam loco – specifically a Mantua 2-8-2.
Before I took the loco apart, it did run successfully on my layout. However the headlight did not work. When I opened up the loco, there was one wire from the motor to the front of the “shell” (see pics). The wire was only holding by 1-2 threads, and it broke shortly thereafter. The “shell” is one solid piece of metal, weighing in at 14.4 oz.
It’s The Fresh Express on the AGW
It’s Fresh Friday. I recently finished these four “Fresh” cars for the AGW. They are 60’ insulated Eel River cars for hauling perishable products. Shhh! They are on the way to Miller Brewing in Milwaukee to be loaded with Miller Beer products.
Improving Sound on HO Kato Diesels
There is no question in my mind about the fidelity of Kato HO locomotive shells. The tooling is superb and continues to improve. The downside is the shells are solid so there is little choice in installing a speaker for DCC sound. And on the recent units I modified, the frames were pretty much a road bock to sound routed through the bottom.
