3D backdrop

Hello every one.

I am building a HO logging layout set in the late 1890's. I would like to have a 3D backdrop made by carving distant mountains into foam, 3 or 4 layers, each 3/8" thick glued onto one another and using fine ground foam of different shades of green rather then painting.

I have done some experiments that are very promising. I don't appear to have the talent to paint any thing convincing and this idea seems to be promising.

More Uses for 3D Printing Around the Layout

So you have heard all kinds of things about what modelers are doing with 3D printing to assist in their rolling stock, locomotive and structure builds. How about some some more basic items to spruce up your layout?

Rock Mold

Recenting I was making a rock structure using a Woodland Scenics rock mold. I followed all instruction and was using Woodland Scenics Lightweight Hydrocal. When I went to release the mold, the mold split on me. This is the second time a mold has split on me (both molds were different). Woodland Scenics has been above par and has replaced them with no question. My question is; am I doing something wrong or is this just a case of getting a defective mold? Has anyone else experienced this problem?
