Lac-Megantic Derailment

This story is getting worse and worse.

73 cars derailed and explode in what appears to be a runaway train incident.

A very sad day in the transportation industry.

Klaxon Chemical Free-mo Module

This module is only 12" long and is built to only go on the end of the layout. It's still not complete. I need to finish building the fence and gates, install the derail device and some other scenery work. The blue flag reads "Tank Car Connected" and will eventually be moved to the other side of the sensor. Installed in the roadbed is an IR sensor, underneath the module is a Pricom Dreamplayer Lite board, Aztec IR sensor board and a small speaker. Watch what happens when an engineer gets too close to the end:

yard entry permission

I sent in a question last week, but don't see it. Is it common practice to ask a yardmaster for permission to enter the yard, or is that just a model railroading thing? John Colley, Port Townsend, WA

Collars & Sense

Making collars for gear repairs is easy.

Hobby shops usually carry brass, aluminum and plastic tubing in various sizes. You may even have in your collection of "I'll keep that. I might need it someday"  items, old chrome plated, telescopic radio antennas. (I do - of various sizes)

I use an electronic caliper to measure the ledge on the plastic gear and the inside of the tubing to be sure of a snug fit.

How did the prototype work?

Hello all. I have attached a photo to this message in hopes that someone can enlighten me. The photo is on Swan Street in Jacksonville FL looking down the old ACL line that served industries in this area. Right in the middle of the picture between the switch points you can see a wooden deck of some type. I assume the device that enabled the conductor or the ground man to throw the points was under this deck. So does anyone know what it might have looked like and how it worked?

dullcote and not frosting windows

how does one go about applying Testors dullcote and have it not fog up the windows and headlight lenses in my locomotives and buildings?????

I'd rather not have to remove the clear plastic windows/lenses

Thanks in advance,

Dustbunnies!

It seems that keeping a layout clean means more than just keeping the clutter off the scenery.  I seem to have a lot of what is so called dustbunnies building up on the layout.  Spiders also seem to find my corners and seem to make webs everywhere I look.  Short of breaking out the monster vacuum, what do you do for general cleaning of said issues, and is there a way of preventing at least the critters from returning?

Operations on the Dames Point Railroad

Posted a new video of an operating session on the Dames Point Railroad. Follow along with the crew of A-215, The Magnolia, as they drop off and pick up some cars on the route.

Staging size vs layout running

Hi all,

I am in the throws of constructing a small switching layout in N scale. The design is such that all sections can be reused in a larger layout (we are planning a house move in the next year) and that nothing needs to be destroyed.

I have built a single ended 5 track staging yard that allows me to store about 45 cars and 4 engines. Having the staging full means that I have no rolling stock at all on the layout.

Lone Wolf Operations?

I am building the Cornhill & Atherton as a “Lone Wolf”, through both circumstance and choice.  This is a situation that is unlikely to change and I’m quite happy with it. But some time in the future I’m going to finish the build phase (unless I run out of cash) and then what?

The last thing I want to do is lose interest and have to start another railroad build, so I’m keen to operate the layout with something like car cards/waybills.
