Operation and maintenance

Car Card and waybill in spanish

for those spanish speaking modelers and operators,

is there is some place where i can get spanish written car cards? or do i have to do them myself? if so any advice?

backing passenger trains

is it prototypical to back off a train into a station to unload passenger?

I've a stub end track that i want to use as a passenger station but trains (going east-west) will have to go in reverse into the track.

Very informative Youtube series about operations.

As a newbie trying to learn all I can about how real railroads operate and how we emulate that in our modeling I spend a lot of time watching videos as well as reading on the internet.  I came across this series of videos by 'CNLVN' on Youtube.

Basic question about operating with car cards

I just finished an operations session using car cards, and found it both daunting and frustrating.  It is not the first time I've operated on this layout.  I was running an extra freight with pickups and set-outs, and the train was limited to a total of 7 cars plus caboose.

What I found difficult to understand is how to decide whether to pickup cars first or to set out out first.  In what order?

I looked through Tony Koester's book and I see nothing addressing this.

Car Cards in Yards

I am planning workspaces for my crews now and I'm wondering how other people do this...

How many card boxes for each yard track do you use?      1?   2?   3?    (incoming, outgoing, hold?)

I'm thinking of including a 4" shelf inset into the facia at my yards for working space. Is this too small? Larger than needed?

How big a working space do you give your operators?
How do you organize the car cards in your yards?

Picture please!

N Scale Operations Video Series

For those who may be interested, a video series is being produced detailing operations on  N Scale Union Pacific Railroad Geneva Subdivision.  The first video is pretty rough, but hopefully things will get better on subsequent videos.

How desirable is wider (more than 2") yard track spacing for operations?

To keep this initial post short, I'll just give a brief description:

I've been thinking about a yard for a while (about a 10 years), since I learned it was more than just a place to store trains...It can involve a lot of switching and interesting operations.
