Operation and maintenance
Supertrain 2014
Curious to see who will be going to Supertrain 2014 in Calgary, Alberta (Canada) April 12-13
I am not sure yet if we will go, however looks like there will be lots of layout and manufacturer .
Wonder if Rapido will have their new F40H-2-D
Ways to Define Which is the Mainline Track?
My friend is starting to ready his layout for operations and it sounds like he doesn't have a different color ballast for his main line track. Short of painting ballast are there are commonly used ways to point out to operators which is the mainline? Sign posts at yard throats? It's a large layout so any suggestions would be appreciated so he can get started. I didn't know of anything other than the ballast coloring...
Thanks if you can help.
JMRI throttle problem
I have set-up JMRI panel pro (ver 3.40) using NCE Power Cab. My locos are programmed and
throttles assigned. They all operate as expected - but here is the problem........
When using the Power Cab throttle the locos respond quickly as I have programmed them, but
when using the JMRI throttles (using any command) there is a 15 to 20 second delay then the locos respond properly.
This occurs both on the main and programming track. I am using new 7' cables connecting the NCE USB
A new variant of tag-on-car car forwarding
Several months ago in an MRH thread on tag-based car forwarding systems I attempted to briefly describe a variant we have been using on the N Scale Columbia & Western for a year. I think it can be compared to the old tag systems in the same way the new waybill and card pocket forwarding system can be likened to 4 cycle car cards.

Athearn - Split Gear Fix that works, completed
On Friday evening, 06 Dec. 2013, I attended the set-up of a local train show. I would love to have gone to the actual show on Saturday, 07 Dec, however, I had to work that day. I bought an Athearn (GP-7 / GP-9) diesel that evening. Circumstances were such that I could not test run it. When I, finally, got it home, and ran it on my layout, it sounded more like a distressed, ready to die steam loco, rather than a diesel.
Question about Track Warrant vs TT&TO
Watching the newly posted Ops Video on Joe F's Siskiyou Line layout, I have a question about Track Warrants. I am more familiar with TT&TO and CTC, which is why I am asking this question.
Problems with loose weight
I have a Walthers Airlside hopper that has a loose weight, which is causing it to lean heavily to one side.
The carbottom is glued in, so I'm not sure how I will access it.
Any suggestions?
Club layout operations ideas
I attend a club with a great group of guys. We meet one or two times a week. The layout is about 15x60 with a single direction main around the perimeter and a twice around turn around on a peninsula. A large and medium sized yard could contain 150 and 100+ cars respectively. There is a major coal/oil terminal (70) cars, auto rack yard (20) and probably another 20 smaller industrial spots. There are normally 250 or so cars spread around the layout. The layout is DCC with mostly wireless throttles.
