Operation and maintenance

Operations Timeline

I am working on development of operating systems for my layout. My Carolina, Chicopee & Central Illinois is a freelance Class 1 Carrier set in 1967-68, an east-west route Norfolk, VA to Louisville, KY.

I have some prior experience operating on layouts using Time Table - Train Order operations, however when I was employed on a 1:1 scale shortline, we used Track Warrants (and Work Authorities for maintenance, etc). I may be partial to the TW system because it is easy to understand and I know how the system works.

Railroad Tycoon. do you play?

Which version do you play? Or, do you play at all. "Railroad Tycoon" introduced me to the concept of progression of raw materials to basic materials and then to finished goods.

I still play the original D.O.S. version which was released in 1990. I use "DOSBox" to play on my Windows 7 computer. The newer, updated versions, and I have them all, just don't have the magic of the original.

using railmops for operations

Does anyone know of a system that works like railmops without having to do all the program writing? I don't mind doing some data entry but haven't done any programming since I had a TI99/4a that ran BASIC back in the 80's.

RAILMOPS

Does anyone know of any software that functions like railmops without all the programming. I don't mind having to input my own info but haven't done any programming since the old BASIC days.

JMRI Operations - cars are getting extra length?

Hi all,

I'm just setting up JMRI operations for my layout, and I'm getting a bit of a bizzare error:

As you can see, the error message is telling me that the car is 24 feet long, whereas the actual length entered in the car details is 20 feet.

Anyone using a Baton System for block clearances?

If so, how do you utilize your batons and how do you make sure operators "always" hand them off or pick them up at the appropriate time? I've thought about using a simplified k.i.s.s. system to be sure oncoming traffic in a long hidden trackage and visable tunnel area until I can get around to signal system(s).

If anyone has used such a drastically analog system please let us know how you do it?

Thanks, Jim

First op session for the Wheeling Freight Terminal

Last week a friend visited and we operated my home layout for the first time. Of course this doesn't happen at the drop of a hat. I spent a few days preparing for the session. I have operated on many layouts, but this is my first home layout to operate since 2001. Details and photos are posted on my blog

Woodchip Pick-up Service

I've been doing some "exploration" of northern California via satellite maps and street view lately and found a neat woodchip loading spur in clear view of the road:

Graphite on the rails = better performance!

Fellow On30 modeler Larry Knapp visited my layout recently, and he mentioned using graphite on the rails to help with conductivity. I had heard of that trick, but tried the contact cleaners (CRC-20, etc.) hoping they would do the trick. Problem is, it is hot where I live in the summer, and opening the windows is usually not a pleasant option. Also, the stuff it toxic, and the less toxic materials I have to deal with after 45 years in the hobby, the better!

Burns Harbor IN

Playing around with google maps I stumbled on Burns Harbor IN. Does anybody know who operates in the industrial section of the harbor. I'm always up for a road trip for pics to get some modeling ideas. Has anybody ever been in the area?
