Operation and maintenance

Question for historians

Hallo!

As I like to model a 3rd class railroad sometimes in the "golden era" of steam thus 1920' I am interested in the average train size which was common to such a road. The modeled area will be somewhere around the border of Virginia and West Virginia.

I rooster as biggest engines for the "Algoma&Wolff Creek Railroad" a ex PRR L1s 2-8-2 but the main engines for freight are 2-8-0 and for passenger service there will be a shiny glamorous 4-4-2 (with small drivers) but for most of the time an older 4-4-0.

Operating in Calgary Alberta?

I will be visiting Calgary Alberta next week and looking for anyone to "play trains". If you have a layout I could help you operate or even work on other projects, give me a shout or friend me on facebook.

Thanks,

Prototype rules for model railroads - what are your rules?

Based on this discussion [ http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/17270 ] I thought I'd pose the question...

What rules does your model railroad operate under?

Please don't critique other people rules, just share your rules so people can get an idea of what operation restrictions are, and what kinds of things they can adopt.

I'm not suggesting that you need to have rules, but if you want to apply any, you need to know what kind of options are out there.

Prototype rules for model railroads

I am wondering if there is any info out there on rules for a model railroad based on the prototype ?

e.g. Spacer box car between loco and fuel tankers, mainline operation and or yard operation ect...

Graphite track treatment

Rather than derail the NoOx thread and in response to Bill's request, I'm starting a new topic on using graphite for contact enhancement on track.  I'm sure someone has mentioned it here before, but I couldn't locate a specific thread on the topic.

Truck Tuner - Which one?

I have read some things that suggest the MicroMark Truck Tuner is better than the Reboxx one.

Do you use either of these?
Do you feel one is better than the other?

I want to order one, but I'm not sure which one to get. sad

Atlas N Scale SD-24 Problem Solved!

I need some help.

My Atlas n scale SD-24 (factory equipped DCC) loses power to the front truck intermittently.  The issue just started today.  It's been running fine for months, and I've made no recent changes to my track.

All other locos and rolling stock are running fine on my track.

I took it apart to see what I could see, and all looks good, although this is the first Atlas I've taken apart.  As a matter of fact, the only other engine I've had open was a Kato P42 I put a TCS decoder in.

Storage

In researching my current Elk Creek Railroad (based on the East Penn Railroad's Octoraro Branch) and my previous layout's Ogden River Railway, I've noticed that some modern short line operators do a considerable amount of car storage on their lines. They use little used sidings and spurs and, on occasions, even the "mainline" to store cars (presumably for their larger Class I railroads) until needed.

Brad Nails to the rescue.

If you have laid track on foam, only to discover your track nails are too short to reach for holding the track down, and you are not crazy about gluing the track down, try Brad Nails.  I did, and it works.

I took a strip of two inch Brad Nails, separated them to individual nails, cut them to length with side cutters and lightly ground the ends to a point with my moto tool.
