I have read some things that suggest the MicroMark Truck Tuner is better than the Reboxx one.

Do you use either of these?
Do you feel one is better than the other?

I want to order one, but I'm not sure which one to get.

Probably both the same

I bought mine from Micro-mark and it works fine. I suspect they are both coming from the same manufacturer just labeled differently.

Especially useful if you happen to get paint in the journals...

Micro Mark

I don't have one, but I have seen numerous references to the Reboxx tool being measurably shorter, and that users have to push the sideframes against it to make it work.  The MicroMark tool seems to relate more to a standard axle length and is thus easier to use.

Micro-mark

Bill, I use the Micro-mark truck tuner and I am very satisfied with it!  It does exactly what is says it will do and my wheels roll much better after I "tune" them.  Can't speak about the Reboxx tool, but I also have read that it is a shorter tool and takes a lot more effort to use.

Micro mark

My friends and I use the Micro Mark truck tuner also. It works great. One friend had bought the Reboxx and had the same problem others have said. He even contacted the company and they said it should work fine. Unfortunately it didn't. So we all use the Micro Mark one. I  haven't personally used the Reboxx one.

Data, Data, ..., Data A little nowledge will go a long way

Several posters and commentators have mentioned that the lengths of the two tools were different, but no one has actually posted the measurements. It would be nice to know what the lengths are especially in comparison to the numbers in NMRA RP 24.1 Journals and RP 24.3 Axles. For HO scale trucks the minimum Journal Bore Span per RP 24.1 is 1.038" for a maximum Axle Length of 1.035" per RP 24.3.

I have a Reboxx tool buried somewhere I will dig out and measure. I have not had to use the tool in several years and do not remembering having any problems with using the tool.

It would also be helpful to have measurements of the axle lengths on various vendors wheel sets.

measurements

The tuning tool in my tool box measures 65/64" and is from Industrial Machine & Tool Co., 3812 Bennington, Kansas City MO 64129

Came in a poly bag off the hobbyshop pegboard.

Information about wheelset lengths etc is at http://www.reboxx.com/wheelsets.htm

I have both

I have both. The Micro Mark one is mine and use it all the time, the Exxact Tools I just purchased for one of our members and have not used it.

I did measure them and here is the results:

Micro Mark 25.86 mm

Exxact Tool 23.51 mm

In the packaging for the Exxact Tool is a paper stating "The current design of Exxact Tool was made a little shorter to make it easier to insert them into the side-frame and remove them from the same. The trick in usung them is to make sure that when you squeeze the side-frames together, you align the side-frame which is being cut so that it is perpendicular to the axis of the cutting tool. A little more pressure needs to be applied than was necessary with previous longer tool."

Micro Mark and Reboxx.

I have both, and the Reboxx tool is 3mm shorter than the Micro Mark tool.  That's not a dead-on exact measurement made with anything electronic,  that's me, looking at a ruler, comparing both truck tuners.

I haven't used the Reboxx tool since I bought the Micro Mark.  I haven't run into any trucks that the Reboxx fits in yet.  I bought the Reboxx, because when I ordered, Micro Mark was on back order, so I bought a Reboxx, because I "just couldn't wait".  I had to really push in and distort that frames of an Athearn and Roundhouse truck to make the Reboxx work, which I thought wasn't right.

I have posted this before, I don't remember what thread it was.

Found my tool

Finally found my Reboxx tool, but I was also able to measure several tool owned by club members.

Exxact Tool 25.95 mm   (1.021") My old tool

Micro Mark 26.21 mm   (1.032")

Exxact Tool 24.35 mm   (0.959") Newer tool

My reamer must be an older tool as it is about the same length as the Micro Mark tool. With the new Reboxx tool being about 2 mm (0.078") shorter than the newer tool.

I tried the longer and shorter tools on several scrap trucks and did not have any problem using either one. It takes a little more concentrations to keep the shorter tool perpendicular to the journal being reamed, but not that much more effort. Inserting the longer tools into some trucks left gouges in some journal pockets which may be one reason Reboxx shortened the tool. It was easy to get the shorter tool into the trucks without damage.

CAUTION: When using these tools one needs to be careful to equally ream the journals on both sides of a truck (ream one journal pocket a little then turn the tool 180 and ream the other pocket). Reaming only the diagonal journals on a truck can result in a truck which “crabs” down the track and can cause all sort of problems. We purposely reamed one truck diagonally and found it trying climb the track on some curves and picking almost every right hand switch frog.

Check the axle lengths?

Dear Truck-Tuner curious,

Not only is the length of the tuners different, but a quick look at one common wheel/truck supplier down here shows the actual as-produced axle-lengths and overall truck widths vary too...

http://www.steameramodels.com/wheels.htm

Maybe you use Reboxx for "proto dimension" trucks and shorter axle-length wheelsets,
and the MM one for "Ath-stock design" width trucks and wheelsets?

Just thinking out loud...

I second the above post.

I second the above post. After buying the micro mark unit I tossed the rebox unit some place. I remember it was designed to work on HO and HOn30 according to the label. When I used the rebox unit it did very little if anything to HO trucks. It is probably fantastic for narrow gage. The micro mark cuts quick and the improvement is fantastic. If I need to change trucks I use Accurail and install metal wheels and have no issues there.
