Simulating brake test
Hi all,
How long would you model testing brakes and walking a train about 15/20 cars long?
thanks
two way hand held radio
I was wondering when trains started using two way radios rather than hand signals. I'm modelling the Joint Line in the 50's and guess that hand signals were still used.
Dust Control Options
My proposed layout will share a corner of my basement shop. I have room about 13 by 20 and plan to use about 8 feet at one end for the layout. The layout will be attached to two maybe three walls.
The rest of the shop will be used for woodworking. The router, table saw and lathe create a considerable amount of dust. I have a dust collector and a fine dust suspended air filter. Still a fine layer of dust is everywhere.
I am looking for some options to keep the layout "cleaner." Some ideas I have had are:
Any operators in Northern Illinois?
Looking for anyone in Northern Illinois area that is interested in prototypical operation. I live south of Freeport. Going to start operating a 25'X26' double deck railroad in the coming year. Operators are starting to get few and far between. I'm 38 and the next youngest in my group right now is 60. Mike Z.
Double heading steam locomotives
I am inquiring on the advantages of double head steam locomotive. I completely understand the reasons for double heading diesel locomotive because they can be MU together and one crew can control many units. But what are the advantages of double heading steam locomotives, other than in helper situations? Use of helpers is understood and is not where I am going.
Denver Derailment
The news this morning kept talking about a train derailment. It is not nearly as serious as the recent ones in the news, but I thought it was interesting. It made me wonder if anyone has included a scene like this on their layout.

Route to Drill (Yard Lead) Track
I'm thinking of placing my drill track (yard lead) at the bottom of my yard ladder, with a turnout off of the engine arrival track to the roundhouse.
It would fit the bill in that it would keep a to be classified train off of the main line and away from the yard tracks. Would this be a problem in any way that I'm missing, operationally?
Rio Grande freight operations
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew or could point me in the direction of info regarding operation on the standard gauge Moffat Line or Joint line circa 1950-1965. I know it was considered a bridge route. Does that mean no peddler or way freight?
Any info would be great.
Thanks,
David
