Degreasing and Ultrasonics

This past weekend I tore down a Life-Like Proto 1000 RS2 which had not been run in several years.  The factory applied lubrication on the worm and bearings turned to a thick paste making running impossible.

So, I gave everything a good cleaning with rubbing alcohol and an old toothbrush - my traditional cleaning method - but was also wondering if anyone felt that purchasing an ultrasonic cleaner was worth the investment.  If so, what models can anyone recommend?

Wireless fast clocks

Apologies for doubling up the posts on this, but I thought this was an area that might be of interest beyond just my blog, and didn't want it to get lost in the discussion there.  I recently became aware of a new wireless fast clock system from Iowa Scaled Engineering that I thought others might benefit from as well.  Details are in the blog entry at http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/9031?page=4#comment-86082 .

MS Access Waybill Generator

Greetings and happy holidays.

Over the last couple years I have been toying with the concept of creating 1/4 sized waybills that could be used as, instead of, car cards.  After several fits and starts I have completed a modification of my existing MS Access car card and waybill generator to become a waybill generator.

Solo Operation vs Solitarie

In some ways, Solitaire is like model railroad switching operation.  Sequences are reordered into new sequences.  The main difference between Solo Model Railroad Operation and Solitaire seems to be that many people will play Solitaire on a computer during idle moments.  So why is computer solitaire widely popular, and can we make solo model railroad operation more popular?

BLMA Cantilevered Signal Bridge

Has anyone purchased the BLMA cantilever signal bridge. www.blmamodels.com  My questions are simple. what are the dimension of the bridge? can it be built to face either direction? how would you rate the assembly?

Where do people get prototypical information on current shippers

I tried to email one line (BNSF) to see which businesses in the New Orleans area use their lines.  They respectively declined to answer in giving out current users.  I understand that completely.  I know that some might try to gain an advantage in business.

I have tried google searches using New Orleans businesses rail/shippers/railroad and anything else I could imagine.

I found listings of 1940 era shippers and before.

Transition Era Switching Operations...

The construction on the TS&G has gotten to the point where I can start moving some cars around. I began researching switching operations a couple of months ago and began putting together a car card  and switch list system. Although I use my PC to make the car cards, waybills and switch list forms, I'm not using any type of software to generate the lists. I'm trying to keep everything manual. I think I understand how the car card, waybill and switch list system works. My questions though are on actual operations.
