Operation and maintenance

Figuring out dispatching for a single operator layout

Hi all,

I'm working out operations for my Bradford Valley Lumber Co. layout, and there's something on which I'd like advice.

The layout, like my previous ones, is designed for one person to operate. Like my previous layouts, I'm planning to use 4-cycle waybills with car cards for car forwarding.

Car cards

So, in my next step towards card cards, tonight I photographed 40 coal cars.  Then I had to crop the images, rename them to the RRID and save them in a bit mapped format (specfically DBID) and then bring up Access to manually enter each dbid photo into the database record for that car.

I wish there was an easier process.  (Oh and the railroad heralds are all already done and in a seperate record type referencially linked to the car records.)

different roads pulling same train

Why do I see trains with engines from more than one road. A couple of weeks ago I saw a train with a single KCS unit on point with 2 UP engines and 2 CSX engines behind. Is this some kind of alternative to getting a routing across a foreign road.

What kind of cars are spotted ar your elevator?

Somebody...
     ...is confused...

This is the Richardson Grain Terminal at Letellier MB last week. There are 2 tracks occupied with mixed freight and not a grain car in sight. ;)

Yup... southbound trains are backed up on the BNML again.

Layout Lighting

I would like some feedback on people's experience with layout lighting. The railway is partly double decked. There is a valance with flourecent lights behind it above the upper and lower decks. In 1000 sq ft I have 74 4 foot tubes in 48 fixtures. It gets really hot in there during an op session. I am considering putting lights in the isles and removing the valance much like Charley did here.

Sppeds of various train types

I am busy working out a running schedule for my railroad. Yet again, I plead ignorance of US ways becuae of my UK location.

So here goes: I am planning my schedule for both legs of my short line that (supposedly connecting Hartford CT with Boston MA). The first leg is 59 miles to Sunset and then 55 miles to Boston (Sunset is instead of Worcester MA)and there are six stations in each half of the railroad.

Operation in O gauge in 3 rail.

Part 1.An Operation of this size takes a lot of space.

part 2. I remember one layout from train master tv Pennsylvania and Western railroad. Most of  the time you can focus on local trains .

part 3-pros and cons. Pros- easy to see and re-rail, easy to couple on and to see. Cons-it costs a lot of money and uses a lot of space.

Conclusion-paper work. You can take the same paper work from an HO model railroad.

Working Hot Box/DED Detector for Operational Realism

While brainstorming about operations on my future layout, I thought it would be interesting to come up with a device that would play back a random recording when an operator passed a certain point on my layout- a hot box/dragging equipment detector. You could have 10 different MP3's, and perhaps 8 of them would be "no defects" and the last two could be some kind of defect alert. When an operator passes a certain point on the layout, they have to press a button, which will activate the random recording selection.

Magnetic Track Cleaner

Our club's HO layout is quite large and more than 35 years old. There are many looong tunnels; with very poor access to the tracks, which were very overdue for cleaning. So I worked up a temporary cleaning car to push along all the trackage. It picked up half  dozen screws, about 18 or 20 track spikes, two coupler box lids, a couple of stirrups, and two full-length brake staffs, one with its wheel still attached. Also piles of black fluff.

I started with a track inspection car from MicroMark and added a coupler.
