NASA Sunsets Their Railroad
Ok, so this isn't strictly a model railroad topic, but I found it interesting, and such a railroad could easily be the inspiration for a layout. NASA had its own railroad, used for hauling segments of the space shuttle boosters to the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building). They just sold off the last two locomotives, EMD SW1500's.

Looking for alternatives to applying brakes to freight cars
Two common practices to "apply the brake" to freight cars so trains once uncoupled from the locomotives do not roll down a hill are setting up some kind of mechanism (such as using a tortoise switch motor) to cause some kind of pin to come up in between the rails to catch on a truck axle, or to have some kind of whiskers planted in between the rails that would prevent the cars from rolling back.
Car card boxes on curved fascia
I am beginning to design fascia-mounted car card holders and many of them need to be at locations where the fascia is curved (1/8" Masonite). I have seen many designs of card card holders that work beautifully on straight fascia. But what about curved fascia? My fascia radii are about 15-30".
Scribing and cutting the back of the holder to match the fascia radius sounds tedious and fraught with peril. I'm hoping many of you have other ideas.

Best system for waybills and car cards
I am getting into operations. I would like to know the best system for waybills and car cards. I originally intended to buy the Micro Mark starter kit that comes complete with cards and card holders. However, I was told by someone who bought them and returned them that they were very much undersized. I am looking for something that is the size of an index card.
Operations using a Train Elevator
With no room for a helix, I will likely be building a 6-ft long train elevator (vertical lift) between the two decks of my planned n-scale railroad (6 feet matches my maximum expected train length).
My question here is *not* about *building* a train elevator. Rather, I'm looking for some creative thinking regarding OPERATIONS when using one.
Were there any *prototypical* reasons for a train to *always* stop at some point on the mainline for a while, then move on? What might it be doing (as a model railroad thought) while it pulls onto, stops, raises, then drives off the elevator?.
Bad car order forms
Hi Guys
I was curious if any of you guys have made bad car order forms at all? Id like to have something a little nice then just a piece of paper for rolling stock that I have to remove from the layout to be fixed at the workbench.
Thanks
Jeremy

Operations,dispatch and communication
I'm getting to the point where it's time to start setting up for operations on my railroad. The layout should be OPS ready by the end of the year. Haven't decided on a program as of yet but I want to start setting up a dispatch panel and I'm contemplating what kind of communications system to use. I'm not a fan of the two-way radio (could be persuaded to change my thinking) and would prefer wired hand held communication.
STOP sign
Is there some rule when to place a stop sign for the train, even if crossing signals are installed?

JMRI Coverage in MRH
I am glad to see the JMRI coverage in MRH. I have been using it for years, but only the "Operations" module. I'm hoping that this part of the program will be covered in depth as it has a rather complicated learning curve. I got help in another forum to get it setup and really enjoy using the switch-lists and other functions to add interest to an operating session. I think it would be useful if the developers made this portion of JMRI available for iOS on the iPad, - Bill
