The IRM in Union Illinois is finally in the beginning stages of a long awaited project, A turntable. They recently acquired one in an auction from the Union Pacific Railway. The table is currently in Denver and they are now looking to raise money to get this thing shipped and assembled in the museum. Instant Toggle Switch Box for your Layout
I built a couple of side tracks on the upper level of my Tombstone Southwest RR so that some conventional locomotives could rest and be ready if needed, but I needed to isolate the track with toggle switches, which I wanted to post near the siding. I was going to make a couple of boxes for the switches out of wood, but as I passed by a can of spray paint I got an idea. I have tons of spray paint tops lying around (always wondering what I could do with them), so I decided to make this the case for my toggle switch. It was a bit deep so I sliced it in half with my ban saw an
Mail or RPO Operating Schemes and Paperwork
Has anyone worked out an operating scheme for mail service or RPO cars on their layout, other than simply running an all-mail train from point to point, or running an RPO car in a passenger consist from point to point? On the prototype in the classic through transition era, for non all-mail trains, were there waybills or other paperwork that specified when and were to add an RPO car to a consist and where to take it off?

How do you clean and oil your engines?
I hope you would share your thoughts and experience about how you clean and oil your engines.
Different views and methods are appreciated.
I think MRH columnist Bruce P did a very thoroughfare column in the january 2013 issue of MRH. He shows how he cleans the Kato NW2 and oils it. He literarily takes the engine apart, clean the gears in an ultrasonic cleaner and lubricates it with NanoOil and NewerStall.

Thaw Your Frozen Coal
The local power company is highlighting the coal operations at one of the plants.
This article describes the process of thawing coal that has frozen into the hoppers and won't unload.
The "Thaw Shed" might be an interesting addition to the operations at a coal plant.
About 1/2 was down the page is a short video showing the cars moving over the heaters.

Logical traffic questions
Railroad ABC, which runs on a 5 day schedule, and has several industries. Each industry has only 1 siding. If industry X has a siding capacity of 6 pieces of rolling stock, and can load or unload that many in 8 hours. I would think that:
1. A random amount of rolling stock, based on their requirements, would be delivered each day?
2. All the rolling stock will be loaded or unloaded, and will be removed when the railroad delivers the next days rolling stock?
Here to There operations Software
I have come across a reference to the above software programme which appears to base operation around realistic waybills and dispenses with traditional carcard/waybill combinations. Has anybody out there tried this system and if so what was your experience of it?
