Operation and maintenance

Using sound to slow you down...

I don't often post here but I thought this might be worthwhile for some folks who are considering what to do about sound.

I currently have a small L shaped N scale switching layout, representating interchange with the main in Davis, CA from where a number of cars are being switched to industries in Woodland CA, on the West Valley sub (ols SP, now CFNR).

Ops Sessions on N Scale Layouts

At a recent Ops Weekend event away from home; during casual conversation, I was advised by a few experienced Operators that there is a much smaller pool of people willing to participate in prototype ops on N Scale layouts. The discussion included stories of layout owners switching from N to HO or other scales. There are N Scale layouts running prototype operations but they are a minority.

Numbering layout switches for Accessory decoder addresses.

Ho guys.. My club is starting to install hare boards to the bottom of the Switch machines. Each one of these needs a address set to it. We have about 30 powered main line switches and we were trying to figure out a good way to number them so that it is more or less easy to know where they are at when we are operating the layout.

Is there a better way to number them besides starting at 1 and working your way to 30

Should we set them up by location

was wondering what others have done.

Question about Less-Than-Carload operations

I am building a small rural village on my layout, with a small passenger depot and a nearby freight house that would handle less-than-carload shipments arriving and departing from town.  The layout is set in the early 1950s.  I have room to make the spur that serves the freight house be long enough for 3 box cars, with the freight doors lined up with the position of the middle car of the three.  My reasoning is that one box car could be spotted at the freight house for loading/unloading while another waiting to be loaded/unloaded is sitting ahead of the freight house.&nb

Operation concept

Hi all.

Being in Portugal is great because of the sun and warm weather... but a model railroader's life here can be hard sometimes.

Why? Because we have still much to learn about operating our layouts. Normally we like roundy-round layouts, with a train chasing its own tail, on hardboard wood table, with lots of track, and no space for scenery.

But there's people like me, that want to get a layout, that can have a proper car forwarding system, with four or five operators.

Switching Greenfield Ethanol with JMRI

Over the past month I've done some experimenting with JMRI and feel comfortable with most of the programs' operations features, however, I've hit a small snag developing a switch list for the Greenfield Ethanol portion of my layout.

All moves within the plant will be conducted by a track mobile. A local will set-out and pick-up cars on track GE3.

End of a Branch Line and length of passing track.

Trying to solve some problems on an HO layout I am building 14' x 2' with an extra 12' x 18" dog leg fiddle yard, baseboards built, sufficient Peco Code 83 bought.

Its 1995 a Santa Fe Branch line only beating closure because of three lucrative industries, a major monsoon flood took out two bridges further down the line that shortened the branch mileage considerably.

3 Days of Ops on the Columbia & Western

Well the C&W just wrapped up three operating sessions as part of the biannual Vanrail Ops invitational along with 7 other Vancouver-area layouts (and one Whidbey island layout - Al Frasch's Pilchuk Division).

Over the three C&W sessions:

Bachmann Sound Value Climax gear tower issues

Hi all,

I have a Bachmann Sound Value Climax locomotive, and It's had some issues direct from the retailer.

The motor, decoder, speaker & side rods work perfectly, but somewhere in the gear tower, the gears don't mesh. I've taken it apart several times, but I can't figure out where the problem is.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks,

CFNR 501
