Operation and maintenance

Tracking and managing maintenance activities

First, let me say that I think Joe Fugate is some sort of marketing genius.  The title of the new book series "Run Like a Dream" is inspired.  I realize that all of my model railroad dreaming is about how the layout looks, what kinds of trains I run, operating scenarios I will execute.  I take "it will run well" for granted.  But, now I think I will also have dreams about "it runs really really sweetly."

Loading a Grain Train - Video

Ran across this very interesting video of grain loading operations. Figured somebody else might find this interesting, great stuff for your grain ops.

Operations at an iceing platform

I am looking at setting up operations at a creamery which uses ice reefers to ship products. My question is how do you incorporate the icing procedure into the operations. Do you load product first then move the reefer to the icing platform or ice first, then product? Since I can't see the engine setting around waiting for the ice or product to be loaded, is it a drop off and pickup later and if so how much time between moves should you allow?

JMRI OperationsPro for small layout

Good morning fellow modelers,

I am in the process of designing a small switching shelf layout based in Wisconsin "i have not pinned down a town yet" that will be a modern, 2015 era, and modeling CN. The goal of this layout is to model a small transloading facility, which I will call BadgerLand Transload "BLT." The layout itself will be 8' long by 11" wide, build in a shadowbox style using Unitrack that will be ballasted.

Industry Yard Tracks - Operation and Naming

A couple questions for the community on industry yards:

How does a large industry yard like those at a paper mill with its own plant sitcher operate?

Are tracks allocated based on commodity (track 1 - wood chips (loaded / unloaded), track 2 - addtives, etc...) for ease of sorting by the plant switcher, or are they all just 'storage' (cars placed on any unused track in the yard) except for a designated pick-up and/or set-out track for the local switch job?

Virtual railroad ops using Facebook and Facebook messenger

Our train club is trying to use Facebook to do virtual railroad operations. I'm wondering if anyone has tried this or is using a different method.

Since the members of our club live a long distance from each other, we thought this might be a way to do get together one night a week to do some ops.

What happens to all of those ashes dumped

Ok, so my steam locos have dumped their ashes, which in turn have been loaded up into an old mangy hopper car -- but then, what next? What did the railroads of with all those ashes? Was there someone who could get value out of those, were they just hauled and dumped somewhere, or...what? Is anyone familiar with how these moved after they left the engine servicing area?

Does anyone make car card holders

Im just getting to this part of operations on my layout and im looking for car cards boxes if some made these would save a lot of us time im sure.

Athearn RTR AC4400CW frame

HI,

I recently bought an Athearn RTR AC4400CW shell. I'm looking for a complete RTR frame, but I've had no luck. Any advice on where to look for one?

Thanks,

-CFNR 501
