Proper Disassembly Atlas Silver Series Trainmaster

The plan is to install a sound decoder and speaker into this new loco. Looking at the bottom of the frame reveals no obvious shell to frame attachment points. Are the couplers what secures the body to the shell? Suggestions?

US Freight Car Builders’ Marks

I know at one time there was a spot the had pictures of all the major US freight car builders’ marks that they painted or plated on every car built. There were, in the same manner, a collection of the marks for the major rebuilders and major Class 1, historical, car shops.

Any assistance would be appreciated. TIA

What N-gauge diesel to buy?

After 20 years out of the hobby I am now back and building a DCC++ N-scale 4' x 2' switching layout with cassette staging to left and right. The layout will be freelance and I am pretty lax as to specific time-frame or rail line. Being in Canada, though, I have a preference for CN and/or CP equipment. The layout will principally switch cars but will also have through-freight and passenger trains to add interest.

Fading and weathering a shiny glossy brass model; again

I have been meaning to weather this shiny model for some time.

I mixed up a batch/filter of 5 percent CNR green with 95 percent flat hazy clear coat and airbrushed the sides.

ExactRail rolling quality.

I have a number of ExactRail freight cars, but am in between layouts so can't really test them.  I ran a few on my last layout and didn't notice anything.

Reason I ask is that I've read a claim that ExactRail freightcars don't have free rolling properties and is refusing to buy anymore because of that.  I've never heard that leveled on ExactRail rolling stock before.

Custom Hand Crafted Flatcar & Gondola Loads

This all started several months ago when I cut some scrap aluminum and steel material into appropriate HO sized sheets of plate steel with the intention of building steel plate loads for flat cars.  Well now that I have some extra time at home I decided to give it a try and then realized these may be of interest to other modelers too and so I have several plate steel loads, structural shapes (material has been ordered), and pipe loads availa

F-7 VS FP-7

Does anyone know?  I have a Blue Box Athearn F-7  and an Atlas FP-7 and there is a difference in length between the two.  as near as I can tell, the FP-7 is longer than the F-7 by about 4 feet.  When I looked at the two alongside I was somewhat surprised to see the difference.  Is this correct for the Prototypes?  The F-7 was originally an Athearn Northern Pacific model and the Atlas was an FP-7 painted for the Butter Knife/Pine tree color scheme for the N.P.  Would the difference be due to a steam unit in the FP-7?

Coupler "handlebars" ? (discovered they're called "cut levers")

Good evening,

Anybody know who makes these general coupler handlebars on the left (or whatever they're called?)  I can find some with Google but they seem a little more specific and finicky than these.  Thanks!

Converting a Athearn HO scale Trainmaster from DC to DCC Truck Issue?

Hi,

I'm in the process of converting my Athearn Blue Box Locomotives from DC to DCC. I have a HO scale Athearn Trainmaster I have a issue with. The trucks are made out of diecast material and my decoder is getting heated up pretty quickly. I am using a DH126D Digitrax / Mobile Dcdr 2FX 1/2-Amp . Does anyone know if there is a plastic version of the trucks? The diecast part number is ATH 43016 and ATH 43017. Any help would greatly be appreciated.
