Locos and rolling stock

Lubrication

May I open a new thread? What is or are the best lubricants to use? It makes sense that these are all plastic compatible (pc). I don't see the sense in keeping oils for metal only and separate for plastic. First, the wheels. I suspect some simple light oil. Second, open gears - a slightly heavier, or ? Third, motor brushes or such - where you can reach them. And any other places y'all have had success with.

Break in engine on rollers or figure 8 of track?

I have an old Bachmann Spectrum GE 44-Ton that I want to clean, lube and get running well.  Does not appear to have run much if at all.  Can I break it in by running it on rollers, or should I find a way to create a figure 8 of track and run it around in circles to break-in the truck swing too?  It is DC, for a small switching layout.  Any suggestions are appreciated.  Thanks.

HO scale axle size chart

There has been discussion on another thread about axle length for HO scale replacement wheelsets so I thought that we could use this thread to input our findings.

Once we have a good sampling that is out there, it will be easier to compile a list and have it available to all forum members.

So please chime in with results.

D&RGW 3000 series boxcar in HOn3

I really like the Rail line kits!
Sure, they have a bunch of miniature parts to be fitted, but the results are so worth it!
I started on this D&RGW 3000 series boxcar the other night.

I painted it with Testor DRGW freight car red and then Microscale gloss before adding the San Juan decals.

Problem with a LL P2K Alco PA

I'm guessing I bought this in 1998.  Ran it once or twice for a few minutes.  Took it off the shelf last week and put it on a track.  Wouldn't move but hummed.

BLI SP Daylight Cars Issues

I began collecting cars for my SP Daylight with introduction of the  Genesis chairs cars. Over the years, I added the full diaphragm BLI versions finally completing the consist a month ago with the hard to find baggage chair car. Two, soon to be three, P2K E-units have been remotored, new drive line components, all lights converted to LEDs, and Tsunami 2 decoders with Scale Sound Systems speakers.

Walthers/Train Miniature 36' 2 Bay: Same?

Curious:

Is the Walthers 36' offset side two bay hopper the same mold as was the Train Miniature 36' offset side two hopper?

More specifically: Will a coal load made for a TM fit a Walthers?

Thanks.

Road name paint dilemma

Hello every one. I'm in the process of converting some of my old Kato engines (GP38-2s) from DC to DCC. When I was a nube I was buying everything ( all different roads simply because I liked them). Now that I have calmed down (some :) ), I've settled on three roads, Norfolk Southern, CSX and Conrail. Instead of buying new locos, I would like to repaint the roads i don't want. Which brings me to my questions. Doe's anyone know the name of the colors for CSX both old and new schemes and what brand of paint is best and comes closest to it?

Chopnosed C420

I decided to try a little historical fiction. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) leased 22 high hood Alco C420s in 1963-64 with the lease expiring in 1976. The engines (numbered 200-221) were returned to the leasing company where they were leased out or sold to other railroads. Some units were resold a number of times and some were chopnosed.
