Locos and rolling stock

P2K tender conversion

For several years now I have had a Proto 2000 0-6-0 switcher. But now I am converting to DCC with sound, and I want to mount a high bass speaker under the coal load. My problem is that my loco has an oil bunker rather than the coal bunker I want. According to the exploded view diagram of the tender, these P2K models were designed to accommodate 4 different styles of fuel load: a Standard coal bunker, an Extended Height coal bunker, a Wood Sided coal bunker, and an Oil Storage tank.

Adding Weight

I have about 50 Athearn Blue Box hoppers that will need one ounce of added weight each in order to meet standard. My plan is to use lead bird shot and encapsulate it with epoxy casting resin, leaving a level surface to paint and weather. My question is do Athearn cars track well with their out of the box weight or is adding this extra weight a benefit?

Driver axle slipping

Inherited N scale steam engines that kids pushed around track loosening axles in plastic centers.  Can not keep drivers in quarter.  Can not find a glue that will stick to the plastic.  Any ideas?

Any tips on building/improving the Walther's Jordan Spreader?

I have the Walther's Jordan Spreader kit, sitting waiting for its time on the workbench.  Does anyone have any thoughts on things needed to make it look better?

Leased DM&IR SD-9's on the Soo

Back in the day it was common to see DM&IR SD-9's on the Soo Line during the winter months. I captured this moment in time at my HO scale Shoreham sand tower.

How to Disassemble Bachmann HO Silver Series Covered Hopper?

I'm in the process of modifying my rolling stock to meet NMRA weight standards and I need to add some weight to two Bachmann HO Silver Series Covered Hoppers. I'm new to this process and can't figure out how to completely separate the car body from the base to add the weights inside. I removed the two screws underneath holding the body to the base and I can gently squeeze the body to separate it around the middle but I can't get the car to separate at either ends of the car.

Western Railway GP28M-2: a GP20 Rebuild Project

The Western Railway is a fictional road created by a good friend of mine who passed away a little over a year ago.  I am continuing his legacy by having a place for his railroad on my layout where it transfers with my SPSF Railway and also has their own customers to switch.  My friend's layout was highly mainline running without a lot of local work.  I was able to get some SW1500s and GP38-2s from his estate, nearly his entire low-horsepower 4-axle roster.  It is a great feeling to be running equipment that he spent time detailing, painting, and decaling himself.&nbs

Was Floquil primer really primer?

I know that Floquil paint has been out of production for several years. As I use up my old stock I'm wondering if the colors marked as "primer" really were primer (special formulation that adheres, covers and/or provides a better undercoat than normal paint). Or, were they just regular paint that was the correct color to simulate primer, for example when painting a brass item to simulate primer-painted steel?

Two examples of the colors I'm writing about are:
