Locos and rolling stock

Set engine for DCC

I'm a beginner to model railroading.

Through eBay I purchased som Atlas flex track, an Atlas GP40 loco, and a NCE DCC starter kit.

My Mikado has Returned

I recently had to send my Lionel Mikado back for repairs to the smoking unit.  All of a sudden stopped smoking.  Lionel was great about it.  They tried to help me via email first for several tries, but no luck.  Finally I sent the unit off to them and with a quick turn around they fixed the problem -- even though my engine was out of warranty.  Great service.  In any event she's back and up and smokin' so I made a little video of her travels, if you care to see it..  She's running on the top level of my Tombstone Southwest railroad layout.

How much do the parts of a freight car truck weigh?

Anyone know how much the individual components of a prototype freight truck weigh on average?  Wheels (33"/36"), axles, side frames, springs, etc.?  The reason I ask is that I've seen many dioramas where the builder scatters such parts about with no regard to how they might end up there given it might take a small football team to lift them.  Likewise in models of locomotive/car repair shops where I worry about the weight bearing limits of the shop floor...

Athearn Flywheels

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone out there would know a easy way to remove flywheels from a worn out engine so I can use them on a new engine? I can also use some advise on installing the flywheels as well. Thanks

Atlas U23B Shell Swap

Does anyone know if the older HO Atlas Master Line U23B locomotive shells, (Red box DCC ready version before the Gold and Silver designations),  will fit on an Atlas U23B Gold series locomotive?

Containers on bulkhead flatcars

   HI all,

I saw this interesting flatcar load last week. I don't know how they got the container on there, or why, but I thought it was worth sharing.

GE 70 Ton Locomotive Dimensions - Found

UPDATE: I have the info I need, thank you.

Can somebody please help me with the following dimensions:

- width of the cab side
- height of the cab from the sill to the top of the windows
- and the length of the carbody

I can find drawings on line, but none with dimensions to scale from.

Thanks for your help!

Mack 15 t in HO

Hi all!
I started a new project yesterday.
A Jordan 15 t Mack!
I looked at the previous builds of it on various foras, and it seemed to be difficult to get a good drive for it.
Unless you bit the bullet and ordered the Hollywood foundry drive.....
I saw that the wheelbase was 24.5 mm, and that jogged my memory. I remembered that I had a Tenshodo motor boogie with that wheelbase!

Atlas HO Gp38 shell removal -SOLVED

In case anyone else runs across this issue, here's the answer.  Couplers and pockets need to be removed (which I had done originally).  There are NO other tabs, catches, screws or anything else to contend with.  It's just a dementedly tight fitting shell.

Cheap Build

Several years ago, myself, Brian Banna, and a couple others came up with the "Cheap Build" concept. The concept was to build and detail a diesel for under $100.oo and still have it look nice. My first concept build was from a Rail Power Products SD-45 shell. I ended up spending $52.oo on this unit. We still do this every now and then at the Detailer. Here is a video of that build.
