I need help with HO diesel switchers

I have for the last 35 years modeled in N scale and will continue to do so.  I find I have room for a 10 to 12 foot HO switching layout.  My problem is that I do not know much about the reliability of HO locos other than Kato.  I am considering the following five locos.     1)  Life-Like Proto 2000 S3    2)  Kato NW2    3)  Bachmann RS-3   4)  Bachmann 44 tonner   5)  Atlas S-4.     I will be running DC only.

Loose weight in N scale Intermountain grain car

Hi guys,

I have several Intermountain grain cars (model No 67065), in which the in-built weights are loose and move about a lot. I cannot see any way to get into these cars to fix it without trying to force them open in some way.

Anybody had a similar issue? Any suggestions for opening up the car?

Thanks, John

Bachmann Alco S4 Wheels Out of Gauge

Hi All.  I'm looking for some advice and/or experience with a Bachmann Alco S4 Diesel.  I received one, complete with sound, for my birthday, and I'm delighted with the looks and speed performance.  I weathered it up and replaced the couplers, programmed it and put it into service.

SP wood chip cars?

I've been looking around trying to find some of these Southern Pacific wood chip cars in HO scale.  I can't find any that are like the one in the picture. I've noticed Joe Fugate has some on his layout, not sure if they're scratchbuilt.  Exactrail has a version but not the kind I'm looking for.  Any info on them would be appreciated

Peoria & Pekin Union RY #200

Hello,

My next project of unique / early streamlined diesel locomtives in 1/29 scale is Peoria & Pekin Union RR #200.

Built by Davenport in 1938 it houses four diesel-engines, two under each hood. This added up to 760hp in total. The unit lasted until 1968.

Speaker replacement for Proto2000 SW-type switchers?

Can anyone suggest a good replacement speaker for a Proto2000 SW9/900/1200 with the factory speaker in the fuel tank?  I'd like the replacement to remain in that location.  The factory version is 1-3/32" (1.09375") diameter and 5/32" (0.15625") thick.

DCC sound in B'mann RS3

I have a Bachmann RS3. What type of speaker should I use and where to put it?

Tyco 2-8-0 Kit

I discovered an old Tyco 2-8-0 today that is still in kit form. My quest is what does it take to get one of these to be a smooth runner other then a new motor and gears? Price unknown.

For several reasons I have decided to stick with HO. Once I get my layout started in the spring I'll elaborate.

Thanks for any suggestions on the Tyco.

Bachmann 484 Northern Smoke Unit is Leaking

My boys were recently given a Bachmann 484 Northern train set from their Great-Grandfather. This kit looks to be from the late 70's early 80's. The boys are fascinated with trains and are excited to have their own steam engine that smokes! Unfortunately, when adding the smoke oil it leaks all over the wheel trucks and the track. I've tried taking the shell off but can't seem to find the second screw. Anyone know how to pop the shell off to investigate? Any suggestions on the leaking oil?

Athearn wheels

After reading many articles about Athearn cast wheels and their problems on diesel locos I am wondering if they have finally changed to machined wheels?  It is this reason I have never bought Athearn products but I really like the detail they incorporate into their models.
