Atlas Master Line vs. Athearn Genesis, GP7

"Not trying to start a gang rumble!"

But, looking at painting a HO undecorated GP7 for Missouri Pacific (70s era).  Athearn has a Genesis versions (Phase I, II, III) but also see where Atlas will ship their "Master Line" versions, (Dynamic brake, no dynamic brake), to dealers this month.

So, looking for feedback on your choice and why.

Mount Blue Model Company--request for thoughts on their kits

I am considering buying one of Mount Blue Model Company's HOn30 freight car kits, and was wondering how difficult the kits are.  I've built an Arduiano caboose (although I had to make some replacement parts for ones I messed up, and swapped in some newer parts for things like brake lines.)  How much more difficult/easier are they.  I intend to have a tiny bit of narrow gauge--probably a tuning fork--just to help set the scene as Northern Maine, and because I LOVE the Maine two footers.

LokSound Select vs. V4.0

I've been exploring LokSound decoders as I hear such good things about them. One thing I can't quite wrap my head around is the different versions. There is LokSound Select, Direct, Full Throttle and V4.0. In particular there is a Select Micro and a V4.0 Micro. What's the differences?

Adding sound and weight to a 44-Tonner

Since a number of people have asked me about it in the past, I finally did a post (actually a 3-part post) on the New Haven 44-tonners, including how I add sound and an extra 3 oz of weight to the Bachmann or W&R brass models. I also use the Bachmann mechanism for the brass version.

The modeling info is in Part III. Enjoy!

Paint scheme imagination stagnation

Progress on my freelance switching layout has been progressing nicely and it has come time to get my engines together. I had 2 Kato undecorated RS2's in storage that have been waiting for years to see some action. For months I wrestled with different paint ideas never really finding what I want. My first choice was to go all black for simplicity but I thought that was boring. I like green but I see a lot of other railroads with green. I ended up painting this:

Broken Body Shell Tabs

I raised this question about broken body shell tabs on Rob in Texas's blog here on MRH. At his friendly insistence he wanted me to post some pictures in an effort to help me out. I didn't want to sidetrack his blog though, so I thought I'd raise the topic here in a separate post. Thanks Rob!

One of the first engines I bought when switching to HO scale was an Atlas U30c diesel. Over time (and probably due in large part to my ineptitude as a modeler then) some of the tabs that hold the body to the frame have broken.

Steam Era Freight Car Group

What Gives:

A few weeks ago I read on a forum post about the Steam Era Freight Car Group and I thought it would be a good place to get detailed info on modeling freight cars.   I submitted my app, but never got any reply.  Until yesterday when I got this from Yahoo - I guess.

Bachmann GE 70 Tonner gears

Hi Guys,

FInally got around to replacing the god-awful OEM decoder in my GE 70 tonner (2nd Gen, with centre can motor) yesterday, only to find all four drive gears have cracked, resulting in a loco that performs like a true dog.

Checking the Bachmann spares site - the only wheelsets they had available (which are out of stock) are those available for the 3rd generation chassis - same as the 44 tonner.

Kevin Klettke Article

I am looking for a rolling stock  weathering article by Kevin Klettke on his opinion of the pros and cons of weathering with  various types of paints (oil vs. acrylic vs other etc...). I cant seem to find this anywhere.

Anybody know where this was?  MRH? MR? My google searches have not found it.  Thanks.
