Re-fasten headlight to painted brass smokebox?

What is a good way, maybe not the best way, to re-attach the headlight bracket without needing to re-do the whole paint job?

I broke the solder joint between the brass headlight bracket and the brass smokebox front.  Both are painted.

Is CA strong enough to keep them together? My past experience tells me no.

Tank car painting question

I've been building the Tichy HO scale tank car, and want to do the tank silver.  (Home-made black decals are the reason)

I've been having difficulty finding prototype pics of silver tank cars, although model pics abound, so I don't know what fixtures should be silver and which ones should be black, from handrails to the straps that help hold the tank on the frame.  Additionally, an all black car leads to details vanishing in a mass of black.

Anyone have any good info or links?

Thanks!

Rebuilding a Locomotive

Hey everyone!

Just obtained my first locomotive for the Low Grade Project! I found a nice Penn Central E33 on ebay and jumped on it. At a glance, Bachmann made a nice model of this locomotive, and there were very minor mistakes, along with a nice oil bath when I opened it up. When examining it closer, and reading other testimonials of the model, I would like to do the following:

How would I remove Atlas freight car reporting marks?

Has anyone successfully removed the reporting marks from an Atlas freight car without removing the paint?

Thanks in advance.

Looking for a water tank car

I'm searching for a water tank car, used on the Gilpin railroad in the late 1800's. I'm finding a lot of round tankers, but this one is a rectangular metal tank on a flatcar. Any ideas, I'm not adverse to hacking the tank together and kit-bashing one onto a flat car myself, but have not found much of any type of tank that would work yet.

I'm modeling in HOn3 scale so 1/87 sized. The tank held 2200 gallons of water. Basically a metal rectangular tank mounted on top of a narrow gauge flatcar.

Weathering N&W

Hi

As we all know N&W diesels had a very dark paint scheme, mostly black. I find it difficult to create an interesting weathering, the only thing I can think about is dust created by a wash with the airbrush.

Any ideas?

Retrofitting Athearn Blue Box using NMRA Standard drop in

I'm curious if anyone has tried retrofitting an athearn BB loco using a standard drop in versus a hard wired unit.

I'm specifically looking at this:

http://www.modelrectifier.com/product-p/00111701.htm

But most Decoder manufacturers make similar.

Which will directly drop into many locos such as Athearn Genesis, but It seems to me that such a decoder would also prove an easier fit on a standard BB loco.

Reefer question

What type of reefer was used in the 1950's to carry packaged poultry - brine-tank refrigerator (RA) or bunker refrigerator car (RS)?  Or something diffrent altogether?

What do you think of this GP-20 with sound - is it a good buy?

I am looking to add a loco to my small railroad. I live in the UK so always have to watch out for import duty and charges plus expensive shipping from the US. Most GP9-GP30 come out at around $170 with DCC and sound.

Purple wire on a Loksound decoder.

Hey guys, I was wondering if the purple wire on a Loksound plug in decoder needs attached to anything. I've never done anything with this wire with previous installes and was just wondering.  I attached the two brown wires to my speaker but not sure if I should be doing anything with the purple wire and if not soldered to anything will affect the sound and operation.  Thanks!
