Locos and rolling stock

Looking for prototype HO scale passenger car

I am trying to find a prototype passenger car that would resemble the Long Island railroad cars from the 90's.  I remember them having entry doors on both ends but not sure about in the middle of the car.  I think around the early 2000 they went to double decker cars but I don't want those.  Does anyone know who might make them.  I don't care about color as I can always paint to match.  Thanks

Smokey valley products

Anyone able to order Smokey Valley handrails direct recently? There is no where to place an order direct on their webpage, and no answer to sent emails. Anyone know of alternatives for HO loco handrails?

SD35 a Poor Puller

A few years ago I bought an HO Atlas SD35, but couldn't run it until just recently, when I finally installed an ESU LokSound decoder it. Once the installation was done I was pumped to try out my "new" loco, and was very pleased until I tried to pull a string of twelve cars up a grade that's a little less than 2%.

Railway Guns

Has anyone modeled any railway guns in any scale or era?  I'm contemplating trying to build an 8" M1888 railroad gun https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8-inch_M1888 preferably with easily exchanged trucks so that it can run on standard gauge or HOn30.  Right now, it's just a wild thought, but could be interesting.  The Maine narrow gauge lines could probably handle the gun.

Stripped coupler screws

As careful as I try to be, I've managed to strip a couple of coupler screws in two of my locos.  Actually,  the screws are just fine.  The threaded plastic they screw into is the problem.  I've always managed to figure some convoluted way to make things work, but was wondering what other more skilled folks do to deal with this issue.

Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Is this decal correct for PRR 2-8-2?

Did the Pennsy ever put a keystone on the tender like this, or is it just a variation by the modeler?  It does look nice.

ATSF EMD E8m Late version HO scale (Kitbash from SP E9)

Hi all,

Bachmann 2-8-0 as a basis for ATSF 1951 class (and a 4-8-4 question)

Hi all,

I am looking / reading around and making some considerations for a couple of HO scale projects i have in mind. I would very much appreciate your input on this.

Would a Bachmann 2-8-0 be a good starting point for  getting towards a 1951 class ATSF locomotive? I don't mind working on the locomotive, even changing the cab (with a scratchbuilt one) and other styrene related modifications, as long as the wheels/wheelbase/rods etc are ok, as well as the general shape/size of the boiler.

Kaolin Boxcars

I recently ran across articles pertaining to 40' boxcars that had been converted to Kaolin service by installing roof hatches in them. Two things I have not been able to find out is how comon were these cars and what era they are most appropriate to?

Also, how would these cars be unloaded at the paper mill? Would they just open one door and let gravity do the rest or could they possibly suck the stuff out through the roof hatches?

Northern Pacific U33C & ATSF GE markings

While modeling one of Northern Pacific GE U33Cs I noticed small (approx. 6"x12") black rectangles located on all four corners of the under frame. Some of ATSF GEs had these also, possibly others.

They appear flat with no depth that I can see. Nobody has been able to determine what these rectangles are for or whether they are indeed flat or have depth.

Anybody have any ideas?
