Digitrax BD4 output to a relay

I'm helping a friend with a signally issue.  His signaling system was designed by someone else (and before his conversion to DCC).  I've been able to make sense of what the creator made however connecting to the Digitrax BD4s he's chosen as detectors is problematic.  The BD4s are working fine, however, I'd like to use the output of the BD4 to operate a relay and the output of the BD4 is not designed to draw anything more than an LED from the looks of the spec sheet.  I know it can be done with a transistor serving as a switch for the relay but have come u

New DCC systems comparison?

I am looking to expand into On30.  This will be my first use of DCC.  I went back through MRH to 2012 and found a comparison of the systems available at that time.

Has there been any new products/systems come onto the market since then or is that article pretty much up to date as far as what the available manufacturers are offering?  Trying to find both a user friendly and expandable system as I plan to add numerous animations to my scenery.

Used to MTH DCS.

Looking for Max Shim Thickness for Peco 100 Guard Rails

I bring this up as an individual subject as I am sure there are LOTS of Peco Code 100 turnout users out there. And there are likely LOTS of those users that have experienced some derailing problems in some situations

There is a relatively simple modification that will improve their performance. It involves the guard rail 'slot' across from the frog area. I'm almost surprised that Peco themselves have not offered some sort of 'fix kit'

How to keep the train runing?

Using PECO Turnouts with ME Flextrack ?

I was wondering whether to use ME code 83 flextrack and turnouts or switch to PECO. I asked for input in another post and decided to stay with ME, since I already had quite a bit of ME flextrack and some #6 turnouts. I'm still in the layout planning stage, intending to build a multi-level HO layout, running NCE DCC. Now based on input from Joe Fugate I've recently learned that I will need #8 turnouts in some places to support my CA Zephyr 85' Budd cars so they don't look like toy trains as they go through the turnouts. ME doesn't make #8 turnouts.

Old Atlas N-scale switches

I have just put together a test loop using Atlas code 80 flex track and old switches from the 70's. The newer finer contour wheel sets are not that happy with those switches (#6 and #4). Somewhere, someone, has to have tuned these old things for the newer better wheels and posted a walk through. Anyone know where I could find it?

NCE Power Pro R/C Noob

Okay, this is a bit embarrassing, but I have an NCE Power Pro R/C system that I've had for... um... er...

...a long time.

I would guess at LEAST 12-13 years.

What's embarrassing, is that it's never been connected to a functioning layout. (I'M fixing that as we speak!) It's only been used to test engines back and forth on short sections of flex track and to play with the sound-equipped engines on said Truncated Central RR.

What's the best way to clean track?

I glued down my track to cork roadbed using Elmer's glue.

What's the best way to clean my track (rails) after the glue dries? I want to clean off any residue, etc. left on the rails.

BTW, in my case, I am using N scale Code 80 track.

What is the best way to paint my turnouts?

I am modeling in N scale using code 80 track.  I have seen a log on line about painting track to make it look more prototypical.

I have not seen much about painting turnouts.  What is the best way to paint turnouts so that they look like they belong with the rest of the painted track.

I obviously do not want to hurt their operation.  I have "floated" my turnouts, tacking them down and keeping the gluing of the other track at least 1 inch from the turnouts.

Any suggestions or experience painting turnouts?  Thanks.

Wheel Resistor Installation

Looking for comments on your success in installing resistors on rolling stock. The "system" we are using at our club involves a lot of steps prone to ending up with useless or damaged resistors.
