Track and electrical/DCC

Balancing track and scenery

I'm working on my track design and have a tough time using track design software and graph paper.  I have built my open grid benchwork for my 9x11 around the room layout.  My depth for all the benchwork is 24" as any wider I wouldn't reach all the way across.

I'm one who likes to layout the track and then look at it for days and imagine running my trains around the layout.  I will be running this layout solo as its a way for me to go into my own little world.

Short cicuit protection for the NCE Powercab

This is my first post, having just been introduced to this great magazine by a fellow model railroader.

I am 72 and my son 38, and together we are building a shoulder height double track mainline layout around the walls of an average sized room. The layout will feature a mainline in Philadelphia between 1935 and 1950.The layout will be running three loco's maximum at any one time, one of which is a 1970's brass model of the Pennsylvania L6 electric loco.

Speakers for DCC Sound Decoders

Hello Everyone,

I would like tio introduce a new and awesome speaker to all of my fellow molders. I have a friend that owns a computer repair shop here in Dallas, TX. he gave me a couple of different pairs of speakers from lap tops that are no longer upgrade able. These speakers are both very small, compact and have a very large range of sound. If you think about that volume and every thing that you can play on a lap top then why not.

My first Tsunami installation

Hey all, I finally got approval and funding to upgrade the Northern to sound! I read all of your advise, which I thank you all profusely for your input, and I decided to stay away from the Digitrax sound even though they were a bit cheaper, and invested in the TSU-1000 Heavy Steam decoder.

I am going to be hard wiring it to the existing wiring system and taking out the Bachmann board and DCD entirely. I have the speaker and enclosure, flux, soder, heat shrink tubing and soddering gun.

wire connectors

Where is it possible to get replacement wire connectors like the original ones on my Marx controllers and switches.

Look Ma, No Wires

As the title says, this is about none or minimal wires.  Some call it Dead Rail.  But as I am going to talk some about charging via the rails, I am not going to use that term here.  I am not posting this to get into DCC vr RC or who likes/dislikes touch pads.  This is to present one way to get rid of those pesky wires and rail cleaning.

First some other discussions must be referenced:

Auto Reverse loop Troubles (digitrax AR1)

Hello All.

Im Having a hell of a time wrapping my head around what Im doing wrong here with the Digitrax AR1 auto reverse unit.

I have a fairly simple 4 x12 board with a oval main line. It has a reverse loop section that cuts thru the middle. This isolated section has a few switches that branch off of it  ( I know its not recommended) First I cut gaps at 2 locations this section is about 2' long. I was getting a short when exiting one end but could use the whole rest of the layout flawlessly.

Which booster for MRC wireless system?

I'm building what will be a fairly large HO layout and after scouring the internet I still don't understand which booster brands or models are 100% compatible with my MRC wireless system. Given the number of locos running at one time and bus runs limited to 30 feet, I think one or two boosters in the 3.5 to 5 amp range would be adequate until the railroad grows somewhat bigger, but I would like to choose from the widest booster selection while planning for future options.

12V bulb and LED Wire Connectors

I'm looking for some simple 2-wire plugs/connectors so I can unplug certain lights if I need to do some future maintenance on, for example, a building.

I saw these and they seemed fine but is the 12V used on grain of wheat or a full 12V LED considered low voltage in this application? There does not appear to be any specs on it.

Signal Naming in JMRI

I'm currently installing signals on my layout in JMRI.  What naming convention would you recommend for each of the 6 signal masts (and the 8 heads) on a siding (other then just a number)?

Do full size railroad just number them or are they related to the siding name?
