Track and electrical/DCC
Track voltage DCC
I changed the track voltage from HO 16v to O/G 20v on my Digitrax system. All locos except one work fine. One with a DH121 decoder will not move. Headlight blinks but no go. Switched back to 16v and works fine, back to 20v, lights blink, no go. Any ideas? I am in O scale and would like to increase track voltage.

How to remove ballast to remove trackwork
I have a friend who has passed away, and I am helping his widow dismantle and sell off his model railroad collection. I would like to salvage the track however half of it has ballast installed. I have no idea what he used to glue it down. Though from what I remember, it was glued back in the mid 1980s, so I presume it would either be matte medium or diluted white glue. Does anyone have a "magic potion" to break down the ballast so i can remove the track safely without damaging it?
Thanks.

DCC conversions in Melbourne
I have four old N scale DC locomotives (3 Kato and a Bachmann), purchased in the late 80's/early 90's. They were purchased for a layout which never got built. After a long, long hiatus, I now have a space for building a layout. Obviously, DCC is now the way to go, and I'm wondering how practical it would be to get decoders installed in these engines. Not something I want to tackle myself. Are there people in Melbourne (Australia) that can do this for me? How much would it cost?

LED Light bulbs (110volt 65 - 100 watt equivalent)
Just finished spending several hours replacing 6 burned out CFLs.
I've been using CFLs since 2007 or so an have 20 of them plus some regular florescent T8 48" tubes. Over the years every CFL has been replaced at least once and many two or more times. I've grown to hate them.
I just replaced some CFLs in the kitchen and we were immediately enamored with the instant on and the overall quality of the bulbs.
Forming tight curves with flex track.
I remember recently seeing a tip for forming flex track but can't seem to find it now. I believe it might even have been in one of Scotty Mason's videos, but am not sure. Basically I saw someone using some sort of tool and running it along the HO flex track to curve it. I need to form 11 inch curves with Atlas HO code 83 flex track for industrial trackage. If anyone knows where I saw it or has advice on forming tight curves with flex track it would be appreciated.

Remondation for soldering feeders to track.
I've just started hand laying my track and that's going ok. I mentioned in my blog that I had wired feeder wires to the rail joiners when I laid my rail. It was recommended that I not do this and solder directly to the rails.
Now, my question is: How exactly should to solder to the rails? Before I spike them in place? How do I get the solder joint to fall between two ties? After everything is spiked in place? Some where in between?
No hurry, the glue is still drying on the ties.

Power to staging yard tracks
Thinking ahead a little to wiring power to these staging tracks. I think I'd like to be able to turn power on and off at each track so that engines aren't all idling on the staging tracks. Good idea or not necessary? If a good idea, how exactly do I need to wire that? Please be specific and use small words, because this is the part of layout construction that I dread the most and understand the least. Wiring. I'm thinking a switch of some kind between the bus wire and the feeders to the tracks.
question about adding a 4 function decoder to a Athearn 9pin quick plug
Hi,
I have an athearn RTR SW1500 w/ dcc quick plug board. I have a four function TCS 4AX decoder plugged into the 9 pin quick plug.
My question, where do I attach F1 and F2 wires to the board. I do not see a spot for either F1 or F2 or the blue common wires to solder to the board.
You would think there would be a spot to solder these wires to the board, since the F1 and F2 wire got from the adapter harness and attaches to the board.
Please help
Thanks

Paint cork before track?
I'm about ready to put down some cork. The question is should I paint the cork a base color before the track goes down, or just paint the cork and track together later? This is a yard area with seven tracks on sheet cork. If I paint first, I'm not sure how to transfer the track plan from my paper plan to the cork. May be hard to see on a dark base. I was thinking of using flat black as my base color. Suggestions, experiences, unrelated but funny anecdotes?

What gauge wire to use for 15" long feeder wire for DCC
What is the smallest gauge wire I can safely use for a feeder wire for DCC that needs to be 15" long. To be very specific on the situation I am using it for this particular feeder wire is a part of a set of wires that is supplying power to the yard ladder. I want each piece of track to have it's own feeder wire except for the smallest of lengths (under 3") where I will there solder the rails together. I want the main track power bus wire to be in the back of the yard, which is why the feeder wire is so long. I want the feeder wires and track bus wire fo
