Dream and design

Planning, how far do you go?

I apologize to Geoff A for derailing his Using Scrap Plywood Roadbed thread. Before the error gets compounded I thought I would start a separate thread.

Dave B and I bantered around layout planning what and what does not matter. Frequent readers know I lean very heavily towards plan to the nth degree before building. There are others that barely get a track plan roughed out and off they go cutting wood.

Heart of Georgia (HOG) layout by Scott Perry - modifications

There was a post earlier this morning about the HOG layout asking if it could be run point-to-point along with a few answers.  The post has since disappeared (marked as spam?) but I wanted to share some info about my modified HOG layout.

How wide do you mark the track when drawing on CAD etc?

I'm in the process of teaching myself AutoCad and like to use Free-mo module designs as my test subject to learn with. My question though is how wide do I mark the roadbed? So far I've been marking it as 2" wide which includes the ballast profile, the result is a track plan that "looks fat". Should I be drawing to the width of the ties or the width of the rails instead? What is the "norm"?

Thanks

How would you handle this?

Happy New Year!

I've been able to spend some time shuttling trains from my staging track to my yard area and I see a potential issue.  My east and west staging yards meet in what I'll call a junction.  My initial plan was to have the junction hidden under the second (upper (by 4")) loop, but I can see now that I would like to have this pair of turnouts visible and accessible.

CFNR (California Northern) west valley sub, Arbuckle to Cortina

After about five years of armchairing it, I've decided to build another layout. I've always been inspired by short lines; CORP, SERA, SJVR, and CFNR the most. I have decided to model the CFNR, inspiration from the excellent GP-15-1 models offered by Athearn, and even though they do not match the prototype, I will through in a GENSET or two by Atlas. If I set my layout in the fall (harvest) of 2009 I think I can get away with using the GP-15-1's with the GENSETS. I have an outbuilding that is roughly 16' x 12' and am using narrow shelf type design.

Lynchburg, VA. One city, three railroads - has it been done?

Over the years I have often thought that Lynchburg, Virginia would make an excellent model railroad subject, and that it would be a blast to operate.  While I have no plans to build it myself, it doesn't stop me from dreaming about it.  I'd like to hear what others think, and to know if anything similar has ever been done.

Because this post is getting long winded, I'll break it up into pieces below.

Small Unique Industry

While researching for industries to incorporate in my layout I came across this operation that was unique to Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. (I don't know about any other areas of Canada). Shipping Christmas trees.
