NW Train Lovers

Just a little more proof that us here in the Pacific Northwest are more than a little train crazy! Check out the latest Washington State Lottery commercial. I like this guy's thinking!

Servo as Turnout Motor

What started out as an attempt to make up a cheap ‘homemade’ manual turnout machine has evolved into a 2 month course in ‘electronics-for-beginners’ and ‘how to use a soldering iron for dummy’s’.

Cantenary Anyone ???

Gang,

I am dreaming a little here, so I think this is the right spot for it.

Does anyone run double stacks under cantenary wire? I know it is done in 1:1 but I have never seen it modeled.

This all started with a bargain on an Acela... Even though I do not model NEC, I always wanted to use some cantenary in some form. Well, I model modern stuff and I want to run double stacks. Apparently, cantenary height differed back in the good ole days, but I see 22` to the wire as being a good round number. That is just a hair over 3" in HO scale.

MEC Mountain Division - First draft - feedback appreciated

Attached is my first cut at a layout in N scale based on the MEC Mountain Division in 1955.  There are a couple things that are counter to the prototype:

1) Mirror image of St Johnsbury yard due to space limitations and to enable a fictional connection enabling occasional continuous running.

2) Extra spur between Intervale, NH and Conway, NH that does not exist but provides potential for future expansion into another room (through wall).

Revisions to the south end of Wilmington

Several months ago I floated out some ideas for revising the south end of Wilmington Yard on my layout.  I received some interesting feedback so I thought I would update all y'all on what i ended up doing.

Is less really more?

Some of you may recall that I demolished my last layout, with the intent of focusing on building models, mainly rolling stock.  While getting rid of the layout albatross did at least free me from the depression of knowing that I wasn't working on it when I "should," I still wasn't happy.  So, I'm thinking of building somrhting smaller, simpler, and more prototypical.

What do you think of this track plan?

The year is 1974, and the B&O and Penn Central lines parallel each other along the Ohio River for most of the trip between Cincinnati and Aurora, IN.  I'm trying to recreate the operations of this area at that time.

Need Advice on Layout Design

Hi All,

Have just moved and now have much more space for a layout, as well as knowing we will be here for about 7 years at least. Since I wasn't too far along with my N scale modular layout, I've decided to make the jump to HO now that I have enough space to do what I want.

I have a wall in the basement that is about 30ft long - I'd like to do a 'shelf' layout - support from the walls rather than leg benchwork - and perhaps make it 2ft or so wide. Both ends would have turns, either dog-bone style, or a loop if there is enough room to hide tracks at the back of the shelf.

Some imput needed on yard design

I've been experimenting with different yard designs and seem to be settling on this one.  I could use some comments on usability, design.  I'm not much of an operations person, but I do want a functional yard.

Notes:

Engine shed track

In January I built my first module that will be attached to a second module soon to the left of the track plan seen below. It is at the point where it is ready to have the track laid.

The track plan represents a branch line terminus designed with the potential of being a flag stop locale if it is incorporated into a future layout by extending the loco lead track and oil storage siding; making it into a longer runaround track.
