Track plan problems

After many weeks doodling designs on a pad I am no closer to solving some issues with my half built layout.  So I was hoping the brains trust here mind be kind enough to offer some suggestions.

A number of years ago I started the process of designing and building my layout. The design, a simple folded dogbone, with a couple of small stations and the ability to extend later.  The space was a single car garage.

Shelf layout with crossing and interlocking

I am ready to start on a new layout and have about a 12 foot bedroom wall I can use for a shelf layout. Now, I already know of most of the online sites that have good examples for these, but can't seem to find anything suitable for my particular needs. First, I am a retired railroader and enjoy switching, but I also have had a lifelong interest in signals, interlocking, etc., etc.

Visible Staging?

Hi,

I'm redesigning my track plan to make it more in par with my newbie status, and one of the things most difficult to me, due to space limitations, is staging...

so how 'bad' or good' is having staging visible on the layout? I'm thinking that with 3 long track will be enough for me..recomendations please

Isla de Caldera Cabeza Dura

Here is my layout idea with a target time period of the 1880's on an island off the west coast of Mexico. I am 99.997132% decided on going with Sn42, that is S scale using HO scale code 100 track for an S scale track gauge of 42". All buildings and trains will be S scale.

Pacific Fruit Express layout. Questions.

So I've decided to do a shelf layout of the Pacific Fruit Express style. I got an icing shed and will be picking up a produce storage distributor. I have a couple of questions regarding the colors of the Pacific Fruit Express cars. I'm intending to use the orange ones, but I've noticed that they have either brown (or black) or red ends on the cars. What's the difference? Years they changed the colors? I'm going for the late 70's on the layout possibly a steam loco as well into the 60's.

How tight are your curves?

I know it's been hashed and re-hashed on the forums, but I would like to hear your feedback.

How tight is the tightest mainline radius on your visible layout?
How tight is the tightest curve in your staging?
How long are the longest cars you operate on it?

Multi-era layouts--ever been done? Any thoughts?

Has anyone ever built a layout or section of layout that can be quickly time-jumped a significant time with a few quick changes?  Swap out the equipment, a few vehicles, and perhaps an easy-to-swap building or two and the layout's changed from the '70's to the 20's?  New England towns often look like time's passed them by.  I like both times, and have some equipment from both eras, and love building my own stuff.  The setting will be northern Maine.  (The freelance narrow gauge North Central has survived until the present.)
