WW II Railroading

Well, it looks like we might have a basement under us again which means I can start thinking layout. It will be a rented home but I can at least build some modules. I have decided on a free lance railroad ( Burr Oak & Southern) operating in the Midwest during the WWII era. First, does anyone else model that time period? Second, anyone have some good reference material on the era they might recommend? Even though I am modeling a fictional  railroad I want to make it believable for the time period. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Wolf Valley RR Engine Service area

Hoping for some better ideas than what I came up with here. I'm hoping to incorporate a Hostler job on my layout and would like to have the best operational service area possible in the space I have. This is my design that I currently have sketched out. The two outside rails are permanent and cannot be move as well as the yard ladder. Everything from the switch leading into the Service area is fair game including structures. If you would like to draw any ideas on XtrKCad let me know and I will send you the file if you like.

Thanks for any and all comments!!!

Planning my first layout in over a quarter-century...looking for help

I am ready to jump into layout building—something I’ve been putting off for some time.  To start, I’m going to build a small (5’ long max) switching layout to be incorporated into a somewhat larger layout in the future.  I want plausible track plan, NOT a switching puzzle, but a plan that would work.

Short video on portable layout design

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and to modelling in general. I'm making a short video blog as my boys and I progress with our build. No doubt there will be many mistakes made but we're just having a bit of fun with it and learning as we go. Please check out my video if you have a spare 3mins.

Effective Grade

Designing a helix for a new layout. For the life of me I can not find a table that lists the effective slope induced by various radii. In other words, the smaller the radii of a helix, the more friction on the pulling force, thus a 2% slope at a 22" radius actually pulls like a 3.5% slope - or something. I remember using this table before. I believe it is from a J Armstrong book. Any help is welcomed Thanks
