Four Locomotives Running.

So far I have managed to get four locomotives back together and weathered. All of them run. Each has some one at the controls. Left on the list is #1 and #8. I have to make handrails for #8. Winter has set in so I should be able to get back to my models now.

Until Next Time.

IAIS 250 déja vu

I visited my friend and fellow IAIS modeler, Joe Atkinson, yesterday. Joe is in the process of converting his entire diesel fleet to Loksound decoders and we got together to try and upload some of the sounds into a few of his decoders and engines. We didn’t get very far with installs, but we learned more about the Lokprogrammer and had a good time catching up and eventually enjoyed running one of his converted engines around the layout with Loksound’s Full Throttle capability.

Athearn moving to Loksound and LEDs!

I just noticed in the latest Athearn announcements, http://www.athearn.com/Articles/Hobbywire.aspx , that the new Genesis UP FEFs will feature Loksound decoders and LED lighting.  I believe this is a first for Athearn, and I presume it's indicative of their future direction for all models.  Made my day!  Great decision on both counts Athearn!

DCC Decoder, Sound and Lights for an older Proto 2000 SD9?

Hi everyone,

I'm finally taking the dive into DCC with a Sprog One/Raspberry Pi 3/JMRI set up. I hope to install my first decoder with sound and new lights on my older Proto 2000 Great Northern SD9. (Not DCC friendly)

As for decoders I am looking for recommendations. The Tsunami 2 PNP seems like a good option, but the ESU Loksound decoders appear really nice as well. Both offer 567C Prime Mover sounds but neither have the RS3K horn, sigh...  Anyways here is the recommended Tsunami set up.

Digitrax SDH166D

I have installed a Digitrax SDH166D in an Athearn CF7.  On NCE power Cab, with Cat5, USB board, and JMRI (just installed the USB and JMRI ) really cool, but my problem is with the digitrax decoder, I can't get any volume from the prime mover set for GP38.  All other functions are great loud bell, loud horn, coupler, dynamic brake, etc.  I have set CV140 at 64 still no volume on prime mover, if you put your ear close to loco you hear it so it's there.  Question is this typical for the SDH should I have gone with the SDXH ?

Cheap and easy way to test LEDs?

Out of a batch of 60+ supposedly "warm white" LEDs, I've now found two that were actually much more cool white - noticeably so.  I'd like to now test the remainder I have on hand so I can send back all the bad apples to the Ebay vendor who supplied them at one time for replacement.  Can anyone suggest an easy, hopefully cheap way to test LEDs?  I have a micrometer - can that be used?  And if so, at what setting?

Looking for information on Atlas Master - N Scale -- EMD GP38

I would like to know if some one can tell me if the Atlas Master - N Scale -- EMD GP38 are out, yet.

The SKU numbers I'm looking at are 150-40002744, 150-40002745 and 150-40002746.

Thank you for your help,

Frank

SPSF Meadow Sub: Ex-SP Kodachrome SW1500 - A Locomotive Detail and Painting Blog

A couple weeks ago, I embarked on yet another kodachrome repainting project for my proto-lanced SPSF Railway, this time an ex-SP SW1500.

What follows is my personal journal through all steps of this project.

Atlas & Kato N scale loco performance issues

Maybe I'm not using the right search terms but I haven't had any luck finding a solution to a few issues I'm having with a few (new to me) locos.

I am running DC with a PWM throttle.  I've had no issues running any of my locos outside of one I discovered has a DCC board in it.
