What's New at the Railroad Hobby Show

jeffshultz's picture

Okay, this is going to be cell phone photos at first, and DSLR shots later tonight.

Update: someone asked that I explain where the Railroad Hobby Show is. Indeed, up until a few years ago, I had no idea what people were talking about when they mentioned "the Springfield show."

The Railroad Hobby Show is put on by the Amherst Railway Society at the Eastern States Exposition Center (Big E) in West Springfield, Massachusetts in late January or early February. Thus it is known as "The Railroad Hobby Show," "The Big E show," "The Amherst Show," or "The Springfield Show."

Spring Mills Depot

Spring Mills Depot got caught up in the Affa issues last summer, so a model they hoped to have in production now is still in paper form. But it's pretty interesting paper...

How about multiple versions of a DODX 6-axle flat car, suitable for hauling Abrams tanks and other really heavy things? On at least one version of this car the container pedestals can be folded down or otherwise stored flush with the deck - that feature will be modeled.

Take a look at the top corners of the ends below - one is square (and about 2" wider) and the other is rounded. Different manufacturers. Both will be tooled. I believe it was also mentioned that two separate centersills would also be tooled due to brake line routing differences between manufacturers.

Along with several prototypical DODX paint schemes, the flatcar will be available in a Spring Mills Depot scheme... and a couple of others that you'll need to see in person when the cars are produced.

I see that the Intermountain

I see that the Intermountain wood reefers are not $42.95 each. That is rather rich for most model railroaders. The good thing is that the price will shrink their market and enlarge Accurail's market! Suits me just fine. Intermountain has almost nothing for those of us that model pre Great Depression. For me, the RTR manufacturers have all priced themselves out of the hobby for this "limited modeler".

San Juan Models

San Juan Models is a new company, formed out of the merging and purchasing of several other companies - San Juan Car Co., San Juan Decals, San Juan Details, American Limited, Grandt Line, and Leadville Shops. Due to the family's wishes, the Grandt Line name will not be continued, but it's products will be. The 25-tonner is going to make a comeback!

At their booth, San Juan Models had several items on display, including these Santa Fe "company service" tank cars. I believe they are sold out at SJM, but another run is in the works. The colored markings indicated the different products the cars would haul:

On the workbench is this On3/On30 4-wheel bobber caboose, which will be available in both the 1883 and 1890 lettering styles for the D&RG. There will also be detail variations available. Like this sample, the production caboose will also be 3D printed. Coupler pads and wheelsets for both On3 and On30 coupler (different heights) will be provided. It's expected to be available Summer 2019:

This D&RGW 30' 3000 series boxcar model is about to expand it's range - into gray painted Maintenance of Way service. To be available in several door and details configurations, the car will include both On3 and On30 compatibility.

In the 1960s the Durango and Silverton painted some of the boxcars into this yellow scheme:

A couple of years later they relettered the cars:

San Juan Models will be releasing improved versions of cars and other items that were formerly produced by Grandt Line. Improvement include single-piece roofs and sides, and improved details from the San Juan Details line. Here are some of the cars that will be seen soon:

Available Dates for the "Grandt Line" products?

Jeff:

Did they give any indication as to when any of the ex Grandt Line products would be out?

Especially the architectural items in HO?

Pacific Western Rail Systems/North American Railcar

PWRS was expecting a shipment of pre-production samples of the National Steel Car 5092 cu ft. combo door box car. What they didn't expect to find in the box were the first samples of their Marine Industries 4550 cu ft. covered hoppers - in several different versions:

For one of the cars PWRS/NARC tooled up a combined pnumatic/gate outlet:

Let's get back to the National Steel Car 5092 cu. ft. combo door boxcar, which comes in several variations, due to different vents, door stops and sills:

And that's it for the new products I saw at the Railroad Hobby Show in West Springfield, MA.

Nice work Jeff, I will not

Nice work Jeff, I will not be buying any of the rtf stuff. When kits are available for my era I will become a buyer. I have lots of kits now and if I need more I will scratch build or buy second hand.

Don't know about the timing of Grandt Line

I would guess perhaps a year or so. The gentleman who explained this all to me had some great stories about some of this stuff. That bobber caboose is going to be printed in the US - it only has 9 parts so it's not like assembly is a major cost factor.

ESU V5 Decoder?

Jeff,
Any word from ESU about the version 5 decoder? They seemed to indicate on Facebook before the show that ESU would have them on hand. The only thing I see from this thread is the V5 installed,in the Scale Trains Dash 9.

Thank you!

Nice to see things I missed.

I'll echo Jim Six and others, in that I'm a steam era modeler, and wanted to see things associated with it, but the manufacturers seem to be moving away from it.

I *knew* I'd seen the Roomettes display, but things being what they were, I mistook it for a decal or articles booth.

Regards!
