What's New at the Railroad Hobby Show

jeffshultz's picture

Okay, this is going to be cell phone photos at first, and DSLR shots later tonight.

Update: someone asked that I explain where the Railroad Hobby Show is. Indeed, up until a few years ago, I had no idea what people were talking about when they mentioned "the Springfield show."

The Railroad Hobby Show is put on by the Amherst Railway Society at the Eastern States Exposition Center (Big E) in West Springfield, Massachusetts in late January or early February. Thus it is known as "The Railroad Hobby Show," "The Big E show," "The Amherst Show," or "The Springfield Show."

Loksound V.5

Other than the ones in the ScaleTrains.com Dash-9's, there weren't any on hand, even at the ESU booth. Form factor-wise, there doesn't appear to be any significant changes from the V5. This looks like an evolutionary update rather than a revolutionary one.

From the ESU publicity materials:

Our 5th generation of LokSound has been developed from scratch. Thanks to a high performance, 32-Bit microcontroller, we have been able to improve all key features again: LokSound 5 decoders will support up to 10 simultanous sound channels. Each channel will reach HiFi-Quality level thanks to 16 Bit Resolution and 31250 Hz sample frequency. LokSound 5 decoders will bring your model trains to the next level and sound almost like the original. A 128 Mbit flash memory chip allows for enough capacity to hold the sounds

LokSound 5 decoders offer an advanced B-EMF load control that runs with up to 50 kHz base frequency and is optimized for low-noise operation. This is important for coreless motors such as Faulhaber or Maxon and also for Large scale locomotives.  Every LokSound 5 decoder comes with plenty of function outputs and can control servos or SUSI-modules if needed. Even better, every LokSound 5 decoder could also be used with Analog DC (even the small N scale decoder!)

Based on the command station, up to 32 function buttons are supported that can be mapped to any output due to our superior ESU function mapping. Three brake functions and a two-stage load simulation will let you enjoy your model railroad even more. Compatibility with is ensured with our LokSound 4 and Select product lines as well as we have continued to incorporate our “Full Throttle” features, like Drive Hold! Even more impressive is that all the V4 sound files already created (Over 100!) will be automatically converted in a new version of our famous LokProgrammer software so on Day 1 we will have a full library of sounds to be able to choose from!

This part isn't highlighted enough, I suspect: "Three brake functions and a two-stage load simulation will let you enjoy your model railroad even more"

"The Only Consistency Is The Inconsistency"

Incredible Job With The Coverage Jeff!

Jeff,

I was there for the entire day on Saturday and a couple hours on Sunday morning before hitting the road.  I cannot comprehend how you managed to make the rounds and get all the great photos and background information.  This was my first trip to the show and to those who haven't been- its awesome and HUGE.  For the modelers that would like to see the products that are in their wheelhouse- if you haven't been to this show you need to appreciate just how overwhelming walking around the four buildings can be, let alone finding every little thing that's new.

My hat's off to you Jeff.

Craig

ESU V5 = "Hi Fi"???

Dear Jeff,

"Hi Fi" @ 31.25Hz?
(Ref: CD audio is 44.1kHz 16bit)

Oh dear...
(Someone get the ESU boffins some ScaleSoundSystem.com speakers and an onboard EQ stage, Stat!)

Happy modelling,
Aim to Improve,
Prof Klyzlr

Great job,

Great job, Jeff.

Thanks,

Barry

Thanks Jeff

Interesting announcements but it does say much about when they will be available. Normally I wouldn't be worried about the timeline, but I was just about ready to hit the "buy" button on a V4 decoder when I read the announcement about V5.

ESU LokSound

The note they sent to dealers indicated they hoped to replace the 4.0 with 5.0 decoders in the pipeline by late February.

One alibi round - East Coast Circuits

I missed this at first because they are videos instead of photos, but I shot some videos of one of East Coast Circuit's LED equipped HO scale Dodge Charger's set up as a police car:

I bought one of their River Point Station Ford utility pickups with a boom on it. I also saw that they are working on integrating LED lighting in N scale vehicles.

And lastly, they introduced a complete RR crossing light system (no gates yet) that will handle trains on two separate tracks. It will integrate with their traffic signal to override it, and contains all the sensors needed. LED equipped crossbucks are not included. https://www.eastcoastcircuits.com/Circuits

Jeff, I know the time it

Jeff, I know the time it takes for you to photograph, and then document on these forums, the various railroad shows you attend is massively time consuming.

I'm sure a great many of us (including myself,  of course) appreciate those efforts, especially when we are unable to attend the shows in person. Thank you.
