What's New at the Railroad Hobby Show

Sat, 2019-01-26 08:48 — jeffshultz
Okay, this is going to be cell phone photos at first, and DSLR shots later tonight.
Update: someone asked that I explain where the Railroad Hobby Show is. Indeed, up until a few years ago, I had no idea what people were talking about when they mentioned "the Springfield show."
The Railroad Hobby Show is put on by the Amherst Railway Society at the Eastern States Exposition Center (Big E) in West Springfield, Massachusetts in late January or early February. Thus it is known as "The Railroad Hobby Show," "The Big E show," "The Amherst Show," or "The Springfield Show."

Athearn
I just realized that I haven't posted the photos from Athearn. They just announced a series of new containers in various sizes and door types, and they had undecorated samples on display:
I wasn't sure if I photographed decorated versions at Trainfest, so here are a couple of the upcoming ACF 4600 centerflow covered hoppers:

No
Dear Jeff,
No, I do not appreciate "dancing the Watusi while doing Quantum Physics" references in a Tech Support or Maintenance tear-down manual, and it appears a number of other "voted with their wallets" modellers around the world don't either.

You know the old saying, "you can please some of the people some of the time" ...
Of course train hobbyists are a diverse bunch, and steam engines, while cool, were gone before I was even born, so yeah, it's diesels for me - mostly second gen.
As far as the show goes, modern folks should be happy by the announcements. About the only thing of interest to me, a late 70's person, are the Atlas 5250 covered hoppers to finally offer a "better" version than the long worn out crude Athearn blue box version.
Truth be told, even with better pay these days, I still struggle to keep up with the nice models being produced. If it wasn't for the Chinese factory shut-down last fall, I'm sure I would be even further behind. Thanks AFFA for that slight breather!

Boring Old Diesels
I have to ask the same question,...they all look alike to me....just a diesel engine hidden inside a box. Even in the early days as they were first evolving they had some very distinctive individual looks, but now they are all beginning to look alike. ...ha...ha
Even modern day automobiles are beginning to look alike to me these days,...maybe its just my older eyes.

Paper Containers for a Yard Scene
Was there anyone displaying such an item at the show?
Thought about asking this of the show recent attendees. For a container yard scene this idea would certainly be appealing.

I think I've seen PDF files where you can print out paper containers.

A alike?
Saying all diesels look alike is just as valid as saying all steamers look alike. Which is to say not at all valid. In both cases there was a lot of variation in the early days, and as technology advanced and what worked best became obvious they became more similar.
What is true is that everything in a category of things you're not particularly interested in looks alike to you.

Ken Rice,
true, back in the sixties, I knew an alco from a ge, a chevy from a ford, a mack from a white, now not so much, but also not as interested either, so things become same.mh
Show pics
Love the conex box models their coming out with. would be good for a unit intermodal train & just need: paint color of ownership line(s) decals, & weathering on them. also great info & pics of the booths you visited.
