What's New at the Railroad Hobby Show

jeffshultz's picture

Okay, this is going to be cell phone photos at first, and DSLR shots later tonight.

Update: someone asked that I explain where the Railroad Hobby Show is. Indeed, up until a few years ago, I had no idea what people were talking about when they mentioned "the Springfield show."

The Railroad Hobby Show is put on by the Amherst Railway Society at the Eastern States Exposition Center (Big E) in West Springfield, Massachusetts in late January or early February. Thus it is known as "The Railroad Hobby Show," "The Big E show," "The Amherst Show," or "The Springfield Show."

OK

Between work and holidays, I haven't been around much the past month, but what is Roomettes?  Near as I can gather, it's a new business Barry Silverthorn is starting, but what IS it?  Interiors?  Lighting for interiors?  Both?

Prince

Neat Prince cars.  There are still a couple bridges left in Lowell, MA near the old Prince plant that say “Welcome to Spaghettiville”, and ‘Wednesday is Prince Spaghetti day” if you know where to look.  The prince track has been torn up though.

Pre 1960 Modelers Shutout at Amherst

I will admit that historical modeling is not the forefront these days at shows like Amherst. We are a dwindling force in US RTR modeling being relegated to the resin and plastic kit world except for the occasional large mainline steam locomotives adored by collectors.  We are however interested in technical advances as our trains (for the most part) do not use 1950's technology.

Additionally the Amherst show by it's very location seems to have a distinctly east coast flavor (people going gaga over Prince Spaghetti which I had never heard of before in my 75 years on this small rock.)

However, the TCS small easily installed Keep Alive units are technology that many of us with dirty old one track minds are interested in.

Please continue to highlight other products that transcend the period and geographical interests.

I shot a video on this one - it demonstrates Woodland Scenic's Just Plug Lighting system's Sequencing Hub -

Here is a still shot of it -

Jacksonville Terminal Company

JTC has several new containers coming out in the next few months, including a 20' tank container and two versions of a 48' corrugated container. And some other interesting stuff.

First, a photo of a container flat with collapsible bulkhead ends. I got something that could be described as a photo of them at Kansas City, but I really wasn't happy with how grainy they turned out. I don't think this model is available in HO scale -

More of the 53' corrugated containers are coming -

One version of the 48' corrugated container - it has interbox connectors inset to a 40' distance -

This other 48' corrugated container does not have the inset IBCs -

Here we see the 20' tank container -

It will come with an assortment of roofwalks and outlet valves -

Here is a test shot of the JTC N scale container yard entrance kiosk -

Also coming from JTC is a container chassis - the dark squares are magnets to work with the JTC connection system -

The last container is kind of a fun one. OOCL apparently had the contract to haul the materials to put on the musical play "Phantom of the Opera" and decorated some of their containers appropriately. The text is supposed to look like that - it resembles broken glass.
