Rivarossi BigBoy & Challenger

This blog thread is to discuss AHM / Rivroassi articulateds and my experiences with them.

I replaced the stock motors with some relatively cheap can motors. And in one case I hooked up two identical motors in one engine,...one for each set of drivers. The motors ran alike so it worked out fine.

Mainline Running video celebration special for 1000+ subscriptions

My YouTube Channel recently surpassed the 1000 subscription mark, so I created a new video to showcase the mainline road train job. This video follows a typical round trip for a crew and the duties they are tasked with.

The Operations season is starting up and I'm looking forward to hosting a few sessions kicking off with the visitors coming for the Bi-annual OPSIG MinnRail event.

Steel cables and barbed wire

Hello fellow modelers,

I am also into tabletop games and recently came across some stuff to enhance the bases of the figures.

I got me some barbed wire with a diameter of 1mm and a steel cable also 1mm.

Compared to the stuff you can buy in the modelrailroad hobby supply, these are cheaper by up to 60%. There are also grass tufts, static grass and nearly every scenery material you can imagine. All from companies not known in the modelrailroad hobby, but well known for tabletop gamers.

sticky water

Sticky Water - About 2 weeks ago I poured Envirotex light for a river and pond. To date I still have several sticky to the touch area's. I believe I mixed it accordingly, and some area's are rock hard and fine.

Can I do another pour over the sticky area's with another product in hopes of hardening those area's..???

Thanks in advance

Project 50 foot

Prototype car: Hudson Bay Railway HBRY 551567, ex CN 551567

My next round of freight cars will be a batch of CN 50' boxcars in the 551XXX series.  These were common in my modelling era and locale so having a few is a necessity.  CN renumbered the cars into the 551500 series starting in 1981 and as part of that work reinforced the car ends with steel beams.

Are the AHM 2-8-8-2's any good?

So, in my still-continuing quest for articulated steam power that will pull my 10 cars up a two-percent grade, I've finally settled on the older 2-8-8-2 mallets from Rivorassi/AHM. Why? Well, a couple reasons. They're a fair bit less money, I've seen 'em pull the wall off two percent grades at the club, and once I finally get to that dream layout down the road I can have them pulling 25-car drags with one of the spectrum 2-6-6-2's on helper duty.
