Prototype information

Track Shifter

We talk about and show you pictures of this unique track machine that was widely used at the mine. With miles of rail constantly on the move they needed a fast way to pick up the rail and move it closer to the level after each shovel pass.

Looking for help with how to install a brake line

I'm trying to find information (or better yet, actual photos) about how brake lines looked on early railroad passenger cars, probably circa 1860 - 1900. The kit I'm building simply has a thick line laid down the middle of the car body but doesn't take into account the elevation of running over the truck bolsters so I don't know how 'steep' the angle should be of the line between bolster and attaching to the middle of the car body.

Copperfield’s One-way Vehicular Tunnel.

The only way to get to the little town of Copperfield. The mine was expanding to the East, the road to Copperfield will be ate away by the mine, so they built this one-way tunnel to gain access to this community.

Carbon Dioxide Shipping

All,

I have a question on tank car type and also if it has ever been made in a model.

I recently was looking at a facility that transfer CO2 from tank car to truck.. The tank cars looked different then the average car.

They had more of a frame, and the tank body appeared to be mounted by the way of turnbuckles on the bolsters.

Any specifics would be appreciated.

Conrail MT4 and MT6 Help

Reading another thread and the subject of slugs came up.

This had me thinking about one of my favorite fallen flags. Conrail..

I did some looking and from what I can tell Conrail only used GP10 rebuilds mated to MT4 slugs,

and only the SD38s with the MT6 slugs...

I have not come across any oddball units being wired for "mother" service.

Can anybody think of a unit other then a GP10 or SD38 mated to a slug for Conrail?

The Diesels are coming, the Diesels are coming.

In the mid-1970s Kennecott Bingham Canyon started testing diesel motive power at the mine, the old Electric motors had given them many years of great service, but now it was time to upgrade. Pictures from the Don Strack collection found at utahrails.net a special thanks to James Belmont for his wonderful pictures.

Catalogues of Cast Iron Facades, Trusses, and Related Items

I have been messing around with my new laser cutter, and I am particularly interested in old storefronts.  In my research, I came across a website that has a number of George Mesker & Co. catalogs for cast iron facades, marquise, and related items.  They are from 1900, 1903, 1904, 1905, 1909, and 1928.

Is it prototypical for an engine to shove and pull cars at the same time?

Would you ever see a loco with a few cars being shoved and a few more being pulled while switching an industry? By few I mean two or three. I wondered if you'd see that if the alternative was a lot more shuffling of cars just to avoid it.

Would a engine ever have cars in front and behind when switching?

I'm wondering if you'd ever see a prototype where an engine had two or three cars in front of, and behind the engine, while doing some industry switching. I can't see why not, other than lousy visibility, but that seems to apply anytime one pushes cars.

Thanks for any insight.

Matt
