Prototype to Layout.

We look at the real thing at Bingham canyon mine, then I show my version I built on the Copper King Mine and Railroad. There were a few things (places or structures) what was important for me to model on my layout.

Did you know the Copper Belt Railroad had a roster of Shay steam engines at Bingham canyon? First used for the underground mines around Bingham, then helped with the started up of Utah Copper and Boston Consolidate Copper.

Track Shifter

We talk about and show you pictures of this unique track machine that was widely used at the mine. With miles of rail constantly on the move they needed a fast way to pick up the rail and move it closer to the level after each shovel pass.

Copperfield’s One-way Vehicular Tunnel.

The only way to get to the little town of Copperfield. The mine was expanding to the East, the road to Copperfield will be ate away by the mine, so they built this one-way tunnel to gain access to this community.

In the mid-1970s Kennecott Bingham Canyon started testing diesel motive power at the mine, the old Electric motors had given them many years of great service, but now it was time to upgrade.
