This is a Rix N Scale

This is a Rix N Scale elevator that I am modifying for a between the track unloader for salt at a warehouse.  The L shaped pare will be painted and upgraded to mimic a below ground vault with a grate on top that catches salt unloaded with gravity from a covered hopper car.

Build against deadline...

Dear MRHers,

Well, despite Sydney Aust being locked-down, I'm still beavering away on my current build as if the booked Debut Exhibition is going to happen...

(The alternative is to give-up, assume the Exhibition will NOT happen,
back off the "speed build" accellerator,
and then likely get caught-short with a layout that's simply "not Ready for Prime-Time" public debut....
...and that simply wouldn't do...)

...and that means that between a crazy Real-World work schedule,
I only have 6x weekends (clear) available between Now and the 1st of Oct
(the "Take stock, and level-up" event threshold), to get everything done...

030721_1.jpg 030721_2.jpg

...Of course, when the only "spare space" available on the layout to place tools safely is the track,
then we must be getting to at least some level of scenery and structure completion...

s_030721.jpg

...and, just for laughs, I thought I'd push the limits of the printers I have access-to, and try scratchbuilding a C&O "Train Bulletin" board... that's just under 1/2" wide, and almost ledgible under magnification...
(Hint: In the last days of the Greenbrier Div,
Brill Railcar # 9055 as "143" went South to Ronceverte, and "142" went North to Durbin)

PS The previously-posted NCE MiniPanel "Shuttle" unit is still functional,
but is slated to be replaced with a full "Sequence" unit, IF I get the time!...

Nice

Third picture down. Excellent capture of the scenery. I've been to Cass many times and you hit the nail on the head with that picture.

Looking Good

The scene is coming along nicely!

I've run (model) trains #142 and #143 many times on the late Lou Schultz's C&O layout.

A Cass modeler down under?

A Cass modeler down under?  How did that happen?  My father was modeling that area when he passed away.  I will see if I can find a photo of his coal loading dock.
I was thinking of going yo Cass in a couple weeks on Vacation and staying in a company house but they don’t run Trains on Monday or a Tuesday any more and that was the only days I had free so why bother?
Someday I will have to finish Cass (it is part of my C&O layout).

One of these Arduino things...

Hi all,

What's on the workbench?? One of these

1260508a.jpg

to do some testing stuff

1260510a.jpg

before it gets its final install on the layout.

So far it has been reprogrammed about 20x already with probably another 2 or 3 sketches at several attempts each that will be needed to be uploaded before it will do what it is finally supposed to do in the Arduino Go-Around #2.

The Arduino Go-Around #2 saga restarts here if you wish to read more about what is being attempted. How hard can it be??? Silly question....

Train Board

Excellent work,  this is just fun.  I know when modeling is right at the level where I like it.  I catch myself staring at an example of work way longer than normal and I realize have a little grin pasted on my face.       God I just love to see good work.   Hats off sir.

Freight Cars and Benchwork

I took the last few weeks off from benchwork construction and worked on several freight cars. I’ve taken several pictures, but I’ll keep this entry brief:

EA96(1).jpeg

This 3 bay hopper is an MDC car that was part of a 12 pack I’ve been working through adding operational improvements and lettering for my KY&N.

AF27943.jpeg

Over the extended holiday weekend, I built all of the peninsula base benchwork and completed the subroadbed and track placement for the staging level. The track goes back through the peninsula wall on the right and enters the first (lower) level and climbs upgrade to the classification yard at Charleston.

I set up a Temporary Work area in my garage....

...so I can sort out my train supplies.

I am retiring next year and plan to move back to Australia. I have also decided that I will never build the dream empire aand having decided my primary interest in operations is primarily industrial switching I need to downsize. No need for 200 hoppers or 20 86' high cubes on a switching layout!

So I am sorting the wheat from the chaff! Out will go most of the Athearn Blue Box, Roundhouse and similar older cars. I am also cataloging all the stock I am keeping and photographing my completed models.

The photo shows the setup, the pile on the table to the right is the current selection of "To Go" stuff. The 2 Every Plate boxes are full of models still in their original boxes. Still a long way to go!

Crosley Radios

Dear MRHers,

Thanks for the feedback, just hope the end-result layout debuts up to the collective's expectations...

BTW, for the Cass Lbr/Mower Lbr era fans of Cass,
anyone remember the preferred brand of radios sold in the Company Store?

No? Me neither...

Finally getting around to

Finally getting around to building my Prairie Co-Op from Walthers.

Basic structure is put together with first layer of textured putty applied to give it that worn concrete look.

Hi Prof Textured putty. Thin

Hi Prof

Textured putty.

26%20(2).jpg

Thin the putty with the cement. Using the brush to stipple. Have to work fast and in small areas. I saw an armour modeler doing this. And got me thinking it might work on my current build.

11.04mark starts showing the effects, application

Turntable Build

First - Prof - that model of the Cass area is FANTASTIC!  Just as I remember.  Terrific modeling!!!

Second - Eric, you asked for more on the Turntable build, so here's a few photos.  I plan to document this build on my Two Hats Lumber Co. Blog soon.

The bridge with the 1/4" phono plug epoxied to the bottom.  VERY difficult to get everything perfectly centered.  I came very close, but probably not perfect, unfortunately.  Also the business end of the receiver jack.

ALTT3.jpeg   ALTT4.jpeg

The installation as of last night.  Getting everything to line up is becoming a compromise, but I think it'll work out in the end.  Still plugging away . . .

ECW PRR G26 Mill Gondola

Back in the day (maybe 1980s or 1990s) Eastern Car Works released some freight and passenger car kits. Among them was a mill gondola based on a PRR prototype.

A friend passed a partly constructed kit that he'd lost enthusiasm for as the basic kit had several flaws. After staring at it myself for longer than I care to admit, I tried to rehabilitate it. What you see is the result.

Several missing parts (power brake, draft gear) were replaced as were some of the cast on hand holds and sill steps. New trucks mounted. After painting with Vallejo acrylics (the original had bare brownish plastic with PRR lettering), Mount Vernon Shops decals were used to complete the model. I added weight in voids created by eliminating under body details and stuffing it with lead sheet. An omission was to do something with the side ladders, which are clunky.

Not state of the art, but adds variety to my gondola fleet of the mid-1950s.
