Reading another thread and the subject of slugs came up.

This had me thinking about one of my favorite fallen flags. Conrail..

I did some looking and from what I can tell Conrail only used GP10 rebuilds mated to MT4 slugs,

and only the SD38s with the MT6 slugs...

I have not come across any oddball units being wired for "mother" service.

Can anybody think of a unit other then a GP10 or SD38 mated to a slug for Conrail?

1-time repowered RSD-15?

This link says there was at least 1x EMD-repowered RSD-15 Mother

Different slug, Prof

The RSD15 (DL600B) was mated to a slug made from an RSD5, back in Penn Central days.  They both carried the same number, 6899.  I think they called the pair an AH1, for Alco Hump perhaps, even though the mother was repowered with an EMD engine.

Quite a weird pair:

Special wiring

To MEC Fan's original question, you can't just mate a slug to any ol' mother.  The mother has to be wired for it, with plugs to carry the electricity to the slug.  Coupled to a unit that isn't wired to be a mother, a slug is just a braking sled.

As a rule, 4-motor slugs have been coupled to 4-motor mothers, because of the way the power is distributed.  But CSX did mate some 4-motor slugs to SD40-2s demoted to yard service, so it's not a hard and fast rule.

Conrails Pairings

Not to get too hung up on the specifics.

Just wondering if anybody had ever seen a MT4 or a MT6 mated to anything other then GP10s and SD38s respectively?

I know there are a ton of different combos and applications across the railroads, but really just focusing right now on MT4, MT6 slugs.

On the roster Conrail also had 1 or 2 ex EL slugs that never were in service after C day. I think those were built on old Trainmaster frames as a side note.

Actually, no, they weren't Trainmasters...

They were actually ex-Erie Baldwin DRS6-6-1500's. The Erie/EL also had slugs converted from their old boxcabs as well.

The N&W had the ex-Trainmaster slugs.

Conrail Hump Power

MT-4's and GP-10's.  MT-6's and SD-38's. U 23C's usually in pairs. Before the SD-38's and U 23C's on PC they used SD-9's On the PRR the SD-9's replaced I-1 steamers. ---  Ken

Ugh

Ok so keeping to the "switch list"

Exclusively Conrail mated SD38s to the MT6 slugs.

Still not 100% GP10s to MT4 exclusivity, but its really starting to look that way

Slugs

Past few days I have been flipping through all my Conrail In Color Books, Conrail Power Books and several Conrail based web sites.

With all of that it appears that only GP10s and SD38s were equipped to be mated to the MT4, and MT6 slugs.

The only notable thing I came across is that Conrail did rarely mate a MT4 to a SD38

So I suppose for now this thread can be put to bed.

**** Oh yes I have seen the picture of a RS11 and a MT4 together on a turn table. They were not mated, just simply using the RS11 to move the MT4 out of the shop.. Likely the RS11 was heading back into the stall to come out a MT4 itself.
