Rio Grande Southern wreck photos - 1912 - never before published

A friend has allowed me to publish a set of detailed photos from a passenger train wreck on the RGS, on May 17, 1912.  Details and a link to the photos are on my timeline page under that date:

The photos themselves are here (but I couldn't fit the full backstory of them - see the timeline above for those details):

Not for your standard sized American model railroader...

Okay, let me put this up front - way too many of us would shop off the "Plus" size racks if they listed mens clothing that way.

This layout would be inaccessible for us:

(trap door entry that appears to be about 18"x18" and a 4ft ceiling)

2013 Goals for your Railroad Modeling?

In December 2011 Rick Wade started a thread on goals for 2012. http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/6579

I thought it would be interesting to review my goals and see what I accomplished toward those goals. And also look at what I had done that wasn't included in my goals.

Tank cars suitable for 1977 - 1982

Hi all,

I have spent a long time accumalating box cars for the Espee and now need to start varying the roster a bit.

What tank cars would be suitable for a 1977 - 1982 ish layout?

Information that is hard to find is:

- What type, ie size in gallons etc

- Which companies were around and shipped by rail?

- Which would be prominent, or more so then others, in the west?

Optimum train length on medium to larger layouts

Hi all,

Just as I have put down the last bit of track on my very small N scale shelf layout, the wife has ideas of moving house in the coming year. It's a shame to start over again and not completing what I have build so far but I also look forward to a larger area to work in. Currently I have about 290cm long shelf, 30cm wide with the small leg of the letter L coming off on one end, giving me 80cm to curve around.

It's done!

Just put the finishing items into the scratch built observation car interior, including several figures.  Carefully lifted it and placed it on my photo stage/turntable.  The newspaper on the bar has the masthead of the only paper of the city that could be on the train the Jan morning that I am modeling.  And I found the proper headline for that morning and it is on the newspaper too!

Using cassettes for staging

I have built a number of cassettes to be used whenever I get a railroad built.  They consist of short lengths of hardwood with 1" aluminum angles, gauged so that the part of the angle that is affixed to the board is set to HO track gauge.

The difficulty is that I cannot get locos to operate on them when I connect my DCC system to the angles with alligator clips.  I get good conductivity with a multimeter.
