Spiral Hill Hopper makes it to the Midwest on the S scale Great Plains Northern
A few weeks ago, a coal hopper lettered for the Spiral Hill railroad was spotted on Roy Hoffman's S scale Pennsylvania based layout. Seems as though the hopper has made it South of the Chicago area to the coal fields in Illinois. Here it is in a Milwaukee Road yard.
A week later it's empty and being moved via the Chicago Northwestern Road near Aberdeen, South Dakota. Photo #2

Here's a chance to post photo's of your model railroad projects or completed scenes.
how bad is 3% grade
I'm drafting some ideas for my first layout (n scale) and in a part of the layout i may need a 3% grade.
I know it's depend on the engine but how bad is? and what can i do to lessen the problem?

Georgetown & Allen Mountain Railroad Visit 1-23-13
I had some vacation to use by the end of January or I would lose it. What to do with that free time? I was anxious to see what progress Michael Rose has made on his Georgetown & Allen Mountain Railroad and since I now live in Florida I arranged a visit. This was my third visit to see Michael and as before I had a great time - not just seeing the railroad, but talking to Michael. You see, Michael is a very interesting guy who has been a model railroader in various parts of the world.
Prototype as a basis for freelancing
I was viewing this interesting Cleveland area roundhouse on Google Maps (found at 41.474953,-81.675571) and wonder about two things - perhaps someone can assist. Who operates it? It appears to be the remnant of a much larger one. History? Would seem to be tailor made for inclusion on several era layouts. Second, what is the neighboring industry that interconnects several large buildings with a long pipe system. Again, more to consider as a basis for a proto-based freelance operation.

Not model railroading - put precision work nonetheless
I'm never going to win an award as the worlds greatest craftsman - cutting a straight line can often be a challenge for me.
And occasionally I see discussions start up about what tools someone needs to do a job properly - some of which I doubt I'll ever own.
And then I see a video like this, and I realize that true skill is actually several points further on a Log scale than I previously thought:
Truck for GE C44-9W Dash 9 Kato N Scale
Problem truck has to be replaced - Do present trucks just pull out or how should they be removed safely.
