Modeling general discussion

The Hand of God

I know some folks don't want to see any grafitti covered railcars at all but I felt like this one was too good to pass up. You might remember a few weeks ago I posted a picture a friend of mine took of a rather fantastic piece of art done on a box car.

Question about model photography

I'm a beginner photographer and have been struggling with depth of field on a lot of my close-up railroad photos, where only a small "depth" is in focus, and there's lots of unfocused areas, like this screen shot below.

Are there any tips or tricks with depth of field settings such that I could have got most of this shot in better focus?

Thanks,

Al

SCARM track planning software reached v.0.9.22

Hello :)

The latest version 0.9.22 of free SCARM track planning software was released on www.scarm.info last weekend. Please upgrade to it if you're using SCARM 0.9.21 as there is an issue in  that may affect Copy/Paste functionality in the program on certain PCs. The new version also enables offline documentation and Parts List to be displayed on Windows 8 PCs.

Glue before or after painting - to do or not to do?

Hi guys,

I have a very simple and silly question, bit embarrasing really...

Over the weekend I have kitbashed my first structure, as opposed to building a kit via instructions. All has come out really quite well.

The structure is glued together for the most part bar windows, doors and roof which all need painting together with the main structure.

Do I paint first, glue later?

or...

Do i glue first and then paint?

The latter is more tricky but will parts stick together after painting?

Thanks!

RE: My two inspirations for getting back into (Check This Out)

model railroading came about as the result of my having boxes of stuff that I had not looked into for years after having re-married, selling my house and buying a "new to us" home.

Richlawn RR V2 - Sharing the space / my new computer desk

Many of you know that my new 10 ft x 12 ft layout room is actually a multi-purpose room  The room also serves as my work office (I'm still fully employed) so I have to be able to do both work and railroading in the same space.  I am blessed with a work from home job and demonstrate software over the web.  I need little in the way of resources in that I need my laptop computer, a phone, and a small place to write.  I currently have a big conventional desk which will have to go (probably to a charity) so here's what I'll be using:

Dallas, Texas...

I'm going to find myself in the Dallas, TX area (Plano/Richardson) for several days next week and I'm wondering what I'm going to do with myself while I'm not in training classes...

I see that there is at least one major railroad nearby, but I'm wondering what might be local of model railroading interest.  I do know of one hobby shop in the area, but I'm unsure if they are online only or not.

So - any suggestions (beyond staying out of the heat)?

Weekend Photo Fun - August 9-11

As Kenny Rogers once sang about Weekend Photo Fun, you got to know when to hold 'em, and know when to post 'em.  Time to post 'em! smiley

MR DVD, anyone find it useful?

Model Railroader tore a page from the NRA's playbook by sending out a DVD (with some type of collector coin) and a letter asking you to pay for the thing. Seriously, the NRA did exactly this about 2 years ago (also, with a coin included).

I don't deal well with being asked to pay for something I never ordered, especially from a for-profit company. They're not getting it back nor payment for it, that's for sure.

Now this would be something to replicate.

Okay the attached picture is NOT photoshopped. This car really exists here in North Florida. This photo was taken by a good friend of mine yesterday and leads me to ask the question, "could I replicate this on the side of a boxcar?' The short answer is no. At least not freehand. The solution is a full size decal. So I have ordered some decal paper and we will see if I can make it look anywhere as good as whoever had enough time and energy to do the full size painting.
