Optical detection alternatives

In Terry Terrance's article on optical train detection in May2014 MRH, he mentioned that there are two forms of detection. There is a third form, magnetic detection using either reed relays or Hall effect sensors.

Moderator note: Retitled the thread to make it more likely to gather the posts the OP apparently is looking for.

R.I.P. Al's Hobby Shop after 66 years

Closed forever as of Monday. Victim of the economy and changing times it seems.

Al's was a local institution serving the western suburbs of Chicago for more than six decades.

Street Running

Check this video which was recorded up in Canada. Trains running on the sidewalk instead of the street. Something new to model, or should I say, I've never seen this model before.

Shaun Toman's HO scale Union Pacific

Hey guys, thought I'd introduce myself and show you some pics of my current railroad! I'm not new the hobby... even just being 31 years old. I first got started when I was 9 years old building a railroad with my grandfather.

Back in April of 2007 my railroad was featured in MR with the title "Realistic Shelf Layout in Moms Garage"

Anyway, my new railroad is 10x10 in my shop at our new farmhouse. I fully insulated the shed, carpeted and the works!

Hope you'all enjoy!

Thanks,

Nearing completion on a module

A module, a work in progress! When it comes to details, I just can't get enough of it. The rental trailers are also works in progress, (they're 3D printed from Shapeways) still to go, weathering, highway cracks, oil stains, track signals and many more details need to be added. Hope you enjoy!

Happy Cinco de Mayo, amigos!

Hola, amigos! Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Have fun and celebrate!

But however you choose to celebrate, please do so responsibly...not like these characters are in my village of San Lorenzo, Arizona!

DCC Installation In 040 Mantua Yard Goat Switcher Steam Engine

Here is what I have 3 mantua Yard Goat switchers. One has a bad engine the other two are fair runners. With that said if I am replacing a motor might as well replace all 3 and add DCC w/out sound.

Has anyone actually done this to this Engine? And what motor do you recommend using and what isolations need to be performs along the way?

3D Printing!

I have just obtained a 3D printer as another hobby.  Wondering if anyone else has done this and used it for model railroading?  My first job was an n scale signal light bridge for our club layout.  Turned out well enough to equip the whole layout.  Anyone else have any experience with this kind of activity?

What is going on with Athearn?

I read at the end of this months MRH that four folks have departed or are about to depart from Athearn. After talking with Shane at a WGH show in January, I learned that Athearn has something like 12-16 employees total if I recall correctly. This means 25%-35% of their team is departing. That is not good in my eyes.
