Modeling general discussion

A New definition for Proto-Freelance

So, in the course of discussing model railroading online, I am often presented with people who tell me: I'm building a Proto-freelance layout. It's BNSF (or UP or CSX or whathaveyou) but it's some route that doesn't exist.

Or, the more adventurous might put forth that they are doing a what if where some railroad that has folded up shop or been merged has not been merged. Or the merger happened differently, or Bankruptcy never occured.

Strange stuff found alongside the tracks

Anyone ever found interesting things walking along a stretch of track? The other day I found this cassette. Anyone found anything else interesting? Wouldn't mind trying to figure out how to add some random litter along my layout.

The Cement Industry

Hello all:

I'm looking for information on the distribution of portland cement by rail. I'm not interested in cement manufacturing plants (well I would be if I had room, but...) rather, in facilities where portland cement is loaded into covered hoppers at other than manufacturing plants or unloaded for distribution by tractor-trailer.

New Modules for Our On30 Modular Group

Our modular group has recently change to a "freemo" format and we are in need of some simple corners to give us some flexibility in our set ups.

So I thought I would build a few 45 degree corners for "fun"

Started off with a $12.00 sheet of underlayment / luan from Home Depot, Had them cut it in 1/3rds to make it easy to transport.

Next step was to layout the curve and cut the arcs.

I used a small router on a trammel to get nice smooth curves

HO Scale UP Oregon Division update! Scenery, ballast.. etc.

Getting more and more completed on my railroad. (this is just one section of the railroad that is heavily sceniced) the other side is all industry and town.. Anyway, here's some of the latest work I've been doing:

TrainLife website problem, or just me?

Hi All,

One of my favorite model railroading sites other than MRH is a site called Trainlife.com. They have old issues of Lionel's Model Builder Magazine online and they make fascinating reading. Recently, I can't get anything to load from this site, all the photos and so on are just the dreaded little red "X" in the box instead of the picture or text.

Live steam operation meet

My live steam club, Train Mountain is known for lots of ground breaking items.  For the current Operation Meet, they have added another.  A live view dispatch board.  Using the link below, watch tomorrow during west coast daylight hours (9-ish to 5-ish).  There are different colors for freight, passenger etc,.  The portion of Train Mountain that is displayed is but a small portion of the 2200 acre park, but it will show the number of trains running during the meet.  It will only be live tomorrow, Saturday the 28th but should be fun in any event.  Ru

Weekly Photo Fun June 27th - July 3rd

OK, here is something different to start us off this week...how about a powered tool car that pushes an unpowered rail truck in On30?

An unexpected Homage

I learned a cool thing the other night.

For the Prof re: logging

Hope this doesn't put you on the spot, Prof K. -- I'm curious as to the comparisons and contrasts between Australian bush logging and Pacific Coast logging. I thought that maybe the logging fans here, and that includes me, could learn a thing or two. Some of the equipment is similar, but I'm sure the challenges and lexicon are not.
