Modeling general discussion

A couple photos from Slate Fork country

Been on a bridge-building and coal tipple-making spree, but also checking out my new (for me) Canon Rebel XT. Got it and the accessories on an auction site for $99. Good enough for government work. It may be a bit dated, but stops down to f/32, brackets shots automatically, etc., etc.

First batch of photos from it are of my N scale Southern Railway Slate Fork Branch.

Slate Fork Branch Second Mine Run with a single GP38 slows to cross the plate through-girder bridge (not shown) across Slate Fork. An empty coal truck waits.

Ideas For Making Layout Facia Labels

I need to make some attractive facia text labels for my HO CNY&NE Railroad and would love to have some ideas on how to proceed. I was considering using "Word" to make some text blocks, have them laminated and gluing them to the facia with some type of glue that did not melt the plastic laminating material. I also was considering using a large sheet of sticky label material sold at Staples and printing directly on these sheets. A paper cutter could be used to cut the labels to size and then stick them to the facia.

Who is going to Cleveland?

For those who are attending the NMRA Convention in a week in Cleveland, I was wondering, is there a time we can all meet, maybe a specifc time during the National Train Show, we could maybe all meet at the MRH Booth?

Most likely I will be hanging out at the LDSIG Room often, though this is based on my past experiences at NMRA Conventions, which has been over 15 years ago (last year I went was 1998 in KC!) so it might not be the gathering place it once was.  I hope to meet many of you whom I have never had the chance.

Unabashed Summer Rerun: Washington Northern's Grandpa Sam's Place

Yes, it's a rerun - and the reason that I'm posting it (and other reruns) is that there are constantly new members & guests to this excellent site and many may have not seen this before. This post is about a structure that I made for my good friend Kevin Klettke for his awesome Washington Northern layout - http://wnrr.net.

NWSL Stanton Drives good at slow speeds??

I am considering a Stanton Drive for a future GE steeple cab project.  My concern is that with the 15:1 gear ratio this power truck will not operate at a prototypic slow switching speed.  What few reports I've read are not encouraging. Has anyone here had firsthand experience with this unit?  Thank you in advance for your input.

Yes It's NOT a MODEL!

I just ran across this topic "Yes it's NOT a MODEL". Back in 1992 I took this photo of a Detroit Edison coal train on the Monongahela railroad. I have always thought this shot would be a candidate for this topic.

Rattle can vs. Air Brush

I have a queston about flat finishes. Is there really a difference between using the rattle can and using an air brush?

Milwaukee Train #27

Train #27 was a pretty unremarkable Chicago-Milwaukee train in the timetable. No Skytops or Super Domes on this short daily 85 minute run to Milwaukee. However it was unique in that it regularly carried a Los Angeles to Milwaukee storage mail car. This car was usually a Santa Fe "economy" baggage car received from the AT&SF in Chicago. Here we see a typical consist of Train #27 leaving Chicago. (Models are N scale)
