Narrow Gauge Interchange
Okay so I'm new to narrow gauge... did the west coast narrow gauge railroads interchange cars among themselves? I don't mean with standard gauge railroads but actually between narrow gauge railroads themselves?
Thanks for any info...
Helpers on Helix
Hello all - first post on MRH.
I want to build a helix (major statement!) - on an existing layout. I have it basically designed. It is an oval shape, each loop about 248 in. long, 29 in. radius one end, 25 in. other. It is right at 2%, so roadbed-top to roadbed-top separation is almost 5 in. Except for the first 1/2 loop, the helix will be entirely hidden. I'm not in favor of little openings/windows along the grade - I just can't figure out how to make them look right. Maybe LED's or CCTV, maybe.

Bowser 3D Printing
Not wanting to hi-jack Ken Rickman's thread, here's some news from Bowser in case you haven't seen it. I believe it's the way to go with 3D printing. Perhaps they finally have it right.

It's official, Carstens has closed their doors
Just received an email from the PNR of NMRA.org:
"Carstens Closing
I have received information from a well respected member of the model railroad publishing field that Carstens, Inc is closing business this week. This brings to the end the publication of Railroad Model Craftsman Magazine, one of the oldest general publications in the hobby field.
The hobby will miss the information published in RMC and the overall support of our hobby from Carstens.
New source of Homasote roadbed.
I've enjoyed using Homasote roadbed for quite a few decades but it seems to have come close to unobtanium in the past few years.
Ran across this on Ebay a couple of days ago from Cascade Rail Supply in Tacoma, Washington.

Ballasting
Hi Folks:
I have quit gluing ballast to my layout for over the last couple of months for several reasons. First, I no longer waste gobs of ballast every time I make a track change. I just vacuum up the unglued ballast and reuse it. Secondly, I don't have to spend the time cleaning glued ballast from my track before reusing it. This has worked so well for me that I am worried it is too easy. What, if any, adverse effects can this practice have? Thanks for any thoughts and suggestions regarding this matter.

Any idea what this bell came off of?
Cleaning out one of the many out buildings on a farm I recently purchased in East Tennessee farm has been around since the early-mid 1800's. Lots of stuff in every building.
Old timber tools, railroad items, old signs, antique tools, trace & harness making stuff, blacksmith items, farm equipment, carriage/wagon making tools etc etc.
The San Joaquin Citrus Route is starting to take shape.
Got some benchwork up and started to lay out some track lines today. As usual for me, the planning on paper didn't look so hot when I got to full size so I placed a couple of structures up on the table top to give the space some scale and laid out new track lines. I find the plywood stage to be kind of depressing. All that planning and visualization turned into a flat wasteland. Next up is figuring how and where to break up all that horizontal flatness.

Air freshners
If there is someone out there that's the inventive type, I have an idea for you. How about an air freshener that smells like coal, oil, and steam engine odors. Also, this one is easier, one that smells like diesel fumes. Would be a nice scents to add to our layout rooms.
Just had to throw out this CrAzY idea.

Model railroad photography video - back to basics
Just sharing our latest video while the summer is still here and the forums are slower.
This one covers the "basics" of model railroad photography. When I say basics, I mean basics. Great for new folks and a great reminder for the veterans.
The video and discussion is not about advanced techniques at this time, but feel free to extend the thread if you choose. Similar to the battery power video I posted a long time ago. it is meant to spur discussion, but I'll get into advanced techniques later.
