Question about paint pens for wathering track...

Hello all.

I have been working on weathering my track. It is all painted, and I am starting add rust to the rails. I have had pretty good result with the Woodland scenics rusty rail pens. But as it goes along the tip becomes very frayed. They do give you one extra tip. But I will need more.

Does anyone know where we can get more of these tips. The pens still have paint in them. All I need to do is buy more tips.

Thanks in advance.

Flat Car Load

A friend and I were discussing flatcar loads one day. Now, he owns and runs a small engines repair shop and in that shop he also has a sort of hobby shop. It's not the kind you buy detailed parts or the latest engine from Athearn. He strictly buys up other's surplus railroad items or picks up items at swaps meets that he sells on E-bay or at other swap meets.

"On CTC" when a main goes by the yard, modern era

If there is a larger to large yard with the main going by it and transition track to the yard, would there be signs to indicate to the yard crew they have to go on the CTC system even though in a switching mode to the yard.  I am assuming they would not be on the CTC system when switching in a yard.

Anybody have experience with Testors Non-Toxic Cement for Plastic Models?

Anybody have experience with Testors Non-Toxic Cement for Plastic Models?  I picked up a tube at my local Walmart as that is the ONLY cement that they had.  I usually use the liquid cement; however, in some instances I find that the tube works best for out of the way areas where I don't have to worry about the "ooze".

I'm wondering if it has the same holding strength as the "toxic" stuff.  This stuff has a nice citrus smell.

Digcom Paper trailers and containers

For any one out there        Icame across these while searching for HO model containers and trailers. They are paper models and are very well done . Has any one out there used / made these?  They look real good on their website.          ron netti

Rail to Road Aggregate Transfer Facility

OK since I've cut out the middle section of the benchwork, for easier access. Yes I dealt with the pop up holes for 3 years. Don't laugh.

Anyways, I've been reworking the outside mainline, that is done. Now I'm working on the two inside mainlines.

I've got some room on the right side for a small industry.

Opposites attract?

Can I ask the inevitable stupid question?

I have two Bachmann a and b diesel units and when I put them on a track with DC power, whatever I do they go in the opposite direction to one another, turn them around and its the same thing. Change the power to the other direction, same thing. What did I do wrong? I did have them apart thinking that I might convert them to DCC but decided against that (but, I didn't mess with the wiring).

Valances

I was banging around in the train room the other day and had my yearly flash of thought that made some sense. I thought I would see if any one agrees or has thought of it before.

My idea is to make the valance around my layout from 3/4" foam. It is light enough to require lightweight hangers, easy enough to paint and best of all softer than wood when you hit it with your head. plus if you have a twelve inch valance you get thirty-two running feet out of a 4' x 8' sheet.

Any thoughts?

Another take on fun

Found this site and thoughtful comparison of fun, enjoyment and satisfaction.

My initial read left me cold and thus I considered his opinion not so thoughtful. However, mulling it over the past few weeks, I find Simon's take on satisfaction to be accurate for my approach to hobby.

Perhaps the fun is built upon a foundation of satisfaction?

Red Mountain Ry.

After modeling a 60's Norwegian shortline for many years, I wanted to try something new. I fell in love with the Blackstone Models H0n3 stuff a while back, so I've decided to make a freelanced shortline railroad located in the San Juan mountains in Colorado. I've never been to Colorado myself, so the inspiration for this layout actually comes from a layout plan I saw in the May 1987 issue of Model Railroader.
