Come on up (or over) Vancouver BC Train show Nov 8 & 9

So if you live along the border states of Washington, Idaho and Montana or in Oregon "down under" come on up, and if in Alberta, come on over!  Next Weekend we are hosting our Vancouver British Columbia show, open to the public, and if you register - clinics and self guided layout tours.  The show is open to the public 1000 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday (Nov 8 and 9).

Little tricks learned along the way.........

I am a great believer in sharing new found knowledge and techniques as well as copying ideas I have found.  What is learning at it's basics, other than copying what you have seen or read!  I am hoping this thread will get you to share your thoughts and tricks with us, no matter how trivial you think they may be.

My new virtual dispatcher - DON

I wanted to add some interest to my solo operating sessions on my little layout and I thought how nice it would be to have a dispatcher.  The wife wasn't interested in the job, so I had to get creative.

I thought how those smart phones can respond to verbal input and I got the idea about doing the same with a computer and created a virtual dispatcher that runs on my laptop and is accessed via a voice actuated headset.  I call my dispatcher DON (Dispatcher On Now) and it / he has greatly increased my enjoyment operating!

HOW TO use a swivel knife in an actual model railroading project

Has anyone seen an article or video of HOW TO use a swivel knife in an actual model railroading project. I know they are used in leather making but I don't see how to use them in Model Railroading. I heard that they are used in Model Railroading though.

Thanks

Roger

Frustrated with painting rail.

I have painted and weathered a lot of rail over the years, but for some reason I can't make paint stay on my peco code 83 rail on the edge of the head above the web of the rail. I cleaned the rails like I always do and tried floquil oil based and non oil based paint and pens, but still no success. However painting the ME code 70 rail's head edge, it stays on.

Any help would be much appreciated.

CAD for structures

Currently, my layout is in the planning stages and I have completed the track plan using XTrackCAD 4.0.3a

I am looking for a CAD program for a MAC running OSX 10.10 so that I can produce designs of all the structures for my layout. Ultimately, the stored designs will help generate a parts list and 2D drawings for when I get the time to build the models.

What CAD programs are currently being used?

I figured out what Walthers Goo actually is.

I had to replace the thermostat in my car a while back.  Someone recommended Permatex Super High Tack Gasket Sealant #80060 for the thermostat gasket.  I'm pretty sure that stuff is Walthers Goo.  Same color, same texture, same smell, both claim the same maximum temperature, both have the same instructions for use and the same cure times, etc, etc, etc.  It is the exact same stuff.  Only difference is it costs about 25% less for twice as much and is available at the Auto Zone a few blocks from my house.

Got Rust?

Got Rust?  Are you working on some weathering? Rolling stock or structure?

Please post them here and share your technique.

Prince Adarius & I visit CT's #1 Hobby shop Video in Wethersfield, CT

OK so let's see where this topic goes.  All I did was take a 30 minute drive with my son Prince Adarius to Tom's Trains in Wethersfield CT.  I am a huge fan of AA Hobbies in Warwick, RI but you cannot sleep on Tom's.  That Hobby shop has a nice selection always in stock.  I just shot the video to share my Hobby shop visits to the web.  I did not cut anything up in the beginning, middle or the end of the video either. :)    Well enjoy
